Pros
Good onboarding process to ease the transition, good support in center, and nice continuing education. Friendly coworkers, at least at my center.
Cons
Some decisions from upper management didn't make sense, such as the decision to remove two classrooms at my center to create new offices for the math and SAT programs. Nobody ever used either of those offices. TAs generally weren't treated well (i.e. paid well) by the company despite the amount of work they put in both outside and inside the classroom.
Thank you for your review and service to ILA and our students. Though I have to agree about the Math and SAT offices, I would disagree about TAs. They, and all other staff at ILA, are paid at competitive market rates (or they wouldn't be here). I think teachers make the mistake of comparing TA pay to their own salary, but forget that, as qualified expats, they earn more per month than the average Vietnamese manager, and for half the hours! It's understandable that some expats don't think local pay rates are fair, but they wouldn't think it was fair if they were paid at local rates either. Thank you for your review and service to ILA and our students. We try to create the best possible environment for teachers to develop and grow so I'm happy to read that you found it so. While I wouldn't describe our working hours as unusual, rather as standard for the ELT industry, I certainly agree that scheduling needs a review. The more variety that can be introduced for class times, the better for everyone and it's something we'll hopefully have a solution for soon. ILA is a decent employer, but it does not stand out from working at any other language center in Ho Chi Minh City. Flexible with schedules.
Cons
Low pay for the teacher assistants

Director of Teaching and Learning
Thank you for your review and service to ILA. If you are a teacher who wants to develop and have a long career in ELT, this is a great place to work. We provide extensive support to our teachers to enable them to create the best possible lessons for our students. The pay of all employees is regularly benchmarked against competitors, and while some expats complain that TA pay is low, it is consistent with other schools. For TAs, ILA is a great place to build their English language skills and make friends with people from around the world. Jonathan Bird - Director of Teaching and Learning, ILA Vietnam

Pros
They will literally hire anyone.
Cons
Too many to list, but most are center based.

Director of Teaching & Learning
Having been employed by ILA for 1-2 years you should know that we don't just hire anyone. ILA has clear standards for hiring, over and above those of other language schools, and carefully follows the Vietnamese labour law as regards recruiting English language teachers. This specifies as required a university degree and teaching certificate in English language teaching. In addition, any teacher that comes on board gets a significant amount of training to ensure they can deliver the best possible lessons for our students. As regards to your comment 'Too many to list, but most are center based', we are always open to constructive suggestions on how we can improve so I'd welcome further feedback to act on. Fun Place to Work, Too Focused on Maximizing Profits at Expense of Students
Dec 10, 2015 - ESL Teacher in Washington, DCRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Teach at ILA gives you a great work/life balance, with fun, young coworkers. You also get great pay for Vietnam's cost of living.
Cons
The new owners of the company implemented a plan to squeeze every dollar out of every school, cramming new classrooms wherever they could. The emphasis became more and more about marketing and getting students to enroll, and less about teaching.

Human Resources Staff
It sounds like you enjoyed your time at ILA but there is an element of doubt and mistrust with regards to the management and CEO. ILA has grown rapidly and just like any company needs to compete and grow. However, this doesn't mean that teaching standards are considered less important. Quite the opposite. As the the number of classrooms has grown, so has the product department and young learners team, which shows our investment in teaching, in particular standards, syllabus and new ideas/projects, so it's fun for our students. This summer school involved LEGO, which shows that the size of the company can also have a positive impact in the classroom.

Pros
1. Lots of support from HR in regards to obtaining a work permit and a work visa. You also get health insurance. 2. Guaranteed at least two days off per week (albeit on some weeks you'll be asked to cover on your off days) 3. Decent pay, but could be a little higher considering that smaller centers in Hanoi often pay out more, even for teachers with little experience. 4. Friendly TAs, teachers and staff; I always enjoyed interacting with my co-workers. 5. They're big on professional development, so you'll get better at teaching over time if you put in the work. 6. Lots of social events spread out throughout the year.
Cons
1. Teaching hours for adult classes were recently cut, so if you want the same amount of hours you'll have to take double the amount of adult classes. 2. If you decide to leave early, you'll have to pay back the training and visa costs, as well as any other bonuses you've collected throughout the year (it's prorated, but yeah) 3. It can be difficult to shuffle around classes to your liking. 4. Personally, I think the TAs should be paid more because of the amount of work that they do. Especially with the amount of money ILA makes each year. 5. Some centers feel a bit hectic while others are more subdued and relaxed. 6. This is my biggest complaint... but teachers aren't paid during Tet holiday. That's around 10 days without pay. And since the company uses a bank of hours for paychecks (you get a set minimum paycheck each month), you'll have to make up hours in subsequent months. It can be difficult to do this if you only have around 15 hours of classes a week. I know the company is raking in the dough... they could at least pay teachers during the biggest holiday season in the country.

Academic Director
Thank you for your review and service to ILA. We work hard to ensure we provide a positive and supportive environment in which are teachers can develop and grow and give the best possible lessons to our students. As the premium provider of English Language, Math, and other supplementary teaching in Vietnam we must always put our students first, and the changes to the adult program, including a move to blended learning, have been driven by student needs. Both university students and working adults gave us a lot of feedback on our courses and greater flexibility was one of the key requests. The result of this has actually been more adult classes across the school and, as you mention, teachers taking additional classes. Undoubtedly, this ongoing growth of the adult program is of benefit to us all. The salary and benefits of all staff at ILA are regularly benchmarked against other key players in the supplementary education market. This ensures the fantastic work put in by the team at ILA is fairly rewarded. However, we're always open to feedback, so thank you for your comments in this area. Our goal is to make ILA the best for students and staff. Jonathan Bird - Academic Director, ILA Vietnam
