      Dream Job

      Pros

I've spent been many years here now and I don't think any trading firm in the world has nailed culture and employee satisfaction like IMC Chicago has. The best evidence I can provide to an outsider is that most of the specific cons you can dig into from the last few years are largely unknown to current employees. The firm is serious about self-improvement, transparency, and 360 feedback, almost to the point of obsession. We went months at a time where the only "difficult" anonymous questions asked of the Chicago MD were regarding snack food availability, such as the hardboiled eggs. They eventually restricted further snack questions. Then they took away the ability to ask questions anonymously because people kept using colorful language to express that the men's restroom was too small. Then they really made us mad when they decided to expand to the entire floor below us and perform a major office remodeling which included expanding the restrooms and adding significant snack drawer volume. In terms of perks, comp, benefits, and events, most people will go their entire lives without experiencing a work environment that provides as much as IMC does in just one of these areas. Partially as a result of this, IMCers are humble, generous, affable, and kind. The stressful nature of the job is mitigated by a constant feeling of upward momentum and the knowledge that someone always has your back. It's been truly exciting to grow alongside the firm. I enjoy going to work every single day, whether I get to the hardboiled eggs in time or not.

      Cons

      - Comp ranges for certain roles likely have unfairly limited upside during blowout years compared to peers' at competitors - Lack of promotional ladder and titles likely does in some way contribute to lower retention around the 2 and 5 year marks, where those in other high-prestige industries will reliably be receiving career-affirming promotions. - While the firm sets a great precedent as one that is transparent about how the partners get paid and what the bonus pool is (and so on), you're still often left pondering "where does the money really go and why?" - Increasingly standardized and competitive recruiting process seems to eliminate a lot of the prototypical characters who have made IMC IMC - Pre-pandemic, there was an apparent widening gap between the "fun" group and the people who don't really attend events. The hiring surge can either bridge the gap or start to make things awkward. - I don't understand the Team Liquid partnership at all - Golden handcuffs and a bunch of other industry-standard stuff which isn't worth mentioning

The best place to work with a culture of teamwork, humility and getting things done!

      Pros

You're given a lot of trust and responsibility upfront. There's no micro-managing, however your manager or colleagues are always more than willing to help/support whenever you need it. You learn a lot, and FAST! Throughout COVID-19, IMC has been so thoughtful in keeping employees engaged and connected, as well as making us as comfortable as possible while we've been working from home. IMC is great at celebrating successes, however continuously gives back to our community and emergency relief funds via the awesome work of the IMC Foundation, which makes me really proud to work here. This is my second time at IMC and I can certainly say that it is an incredible place to work!

      Cons

Can be extremely fast-paced and demanding at times, however it does suit those who like to be busy and constantly challenged!

Mixed bag where the pros outweigh the cons

Feb 1, 2020 - Trader in Chicago, IL

      Business Outlook

      Pros

-Junior people are generally honest, friendly, and extremely smart -Some really exceptional managers as well (along with some less than exceptional ones) -Relatively transparent internally for a trading firm -Compensation is reasonably good for the trading/hedge fund industry, and fantastic relative to most other industries -Excellent benefits -Management can be very agile, people will push to implement an idea quickly when it seems good -There's a sincere culture of charity and giving back -Not completely a meritocracy, but pretty meritocratic. If you make the company money you will get paid, up to a point.

      Cons

-Firing can be arbitrary or politically motivated -Amsterdam office priorities can conflict with Chicago office priorities, and Amsterdam always wins -Management can change priorities rapidly, feels disorganized at times -Bonuses are inherently political, and the distribution of the bonus pool is very skewed -Lots of turnover, most traders have been in their jobs for less than 3 years -Strategies are generally quite latency dependent and internal trading systems are both quite automated and quite idiosyncratic. Lots of what you learn here will not be useful anywhere else. Though this is beginning to change. -Changes to trading strategies/systems aren't always made in the most scientific way -Chicago office subsidizes bonus pools of other offices, particularly Amsterdam

      Pros

      - Top notch compensation - Brilliant coworkers - Challenging problems - Strong focus on learning and mentorship for new employees - Fun events, happy hours, company trip

      Cons

Not a place to coast if that's what you're looking for. IMC expects a lot from employees (and IMC gives you a lot in return).
