      Mediocre at best

      Pros

Some really excellent people who toil unbelievably hard to keep the train on the tracks and do right by the customer. Senior Management doesn't realize how lucky they are to have people who are willing to go the extra mile to do the right thing, often in the face of crippling legacy IT systems, analysis paralysis, and ill-informed management.

      Cons

Have worked at ING (and previously Aetna) for 20 years. It's never been a company that can make an informed or timely decision, nor a timely decision. It's not on an upward trajectory; I personally have never seen it so bloated and so ineffective. Micromanagement at many levels, yet they are curiously blind to customer satisfaction, competitive threats, and multliple inefficient systems. Good career opportunities IF you are friends with the right people. Compensation reasonable; upper management comp is very good. Work/life balance depends on your particular team. Culture and values - lots of platitudes, all of them with an "orange" in the name. Compliance is key; a good thing except real and tangible focus on doing right by the customer is far, far behind being "compliant."

      Typical Financial Services Culture

      Pros

Good compensation and bonuses. The company would pay for anyone to prepare for and take the CFA exam. There are some nice co-workers.

      Cons

Poor work/life balance for back office employees. Poor performers are kept around for way too long in alot of cases. Certain awful managers were seemingly rewarded for bad behavior, and HR was powerless to intervene.

      Enriching experience

      Pros

Work on various multiple sectors and different deal types International team with inspiring colleagues & various backgrounds Involvement at many levels of the deals. Meeting participation, financial modelling and powerpoint creation was all required from the interns. New and well maintained office space with all advantages of being in the city (pre Covid 19)

      Cons

Poor work life balance that comes with an M&A job. Made worse during covid pandemic (some days could start at 12pm and end at Midnight). No structure or ability to create an efficient daily routine for the interns creating all the marketing material. Lack of feedback from managers during first period of lockdown 2020. It was felt as if intern presence was not prioritised and slightly forgotten. Very disappointing pay level given the amount of work provided and cost of living in London

      Pros

Great possibility to get in contact with cutting edge people and experience on a variety of fields. Tech and non-tech profiles are welcome and it's a good place to learn a lot.

      Cons

Some countries, especially the minor ones, are not that aligned with the global culture and keeps moving with the tradizional micromanagement and command and control environment, which ultimately leads to poor work-life balance, poor engagement and high turnover.
