I worked at INOVA Diagnostics full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Benefits, coworkers, flexible schedule, location

    Cons

    Pay, Promotions, Safety, Management, Mold

    Advice to Management

I worked for Inova for almost 2 and a half years. I did not want to leave the company, but I was driven to look for another job because of the safety issues that concerned me. The company was not being transparent regarding all the construction that was being done as well as the mold that was being found. The mold was a major concern because they were never mentioned during the safety meetings hosted by EH&S. The only things EH&S would mention are spills that would happened and who cleaned up the spill. I have worked in the Biotech industry for a while, and everyone knows spills are not the only accidents that happen. Long story short, I left because of the mold. To this day my old coworkers do not know if they are working in a safe environment. When I quit, the response I got from HR was if I knew anyone else who was concerned. Honestly there are several people concerned, but they are fearful of HR retaliating back, and they know nothing will be done because they have tried in the past. I gave a two weeks notice and that was enough time for the company to show that it is a safe environment, but they never reassured me. Also, people are sick because of working in a molded building. If you are allergic to mold, you should consider if it is worth the health risk.
The people I worked with were great. The job was never stressful for me. It was one of the easiest jobs I had. Most the people are friendly, but not everyone understands the scientific side of what is going on. Promotions happen faster when you are friends with the higher ups. People who are not qualified to be managers or group leads (they do not understand the science or even how to use the instruments in lab) are your leaders. Some of the people actually know what they are doing and will help you with the science and your projects. Just run your experiment and get a result and you will be fine.

If you are going to school, this is a great job, it is very flexible. I was able to finish a few classes to help me with my personal goals. A friend of mine was able to plan her wedding while on the job because she had that much free time, when we were slow, and we were very slow at one point. I would recommend this job to people who need the experience and cannot get hired anywhere else. Make this your last resort. The benefits were great, but you can get higher pay and better benefits at other companies. The pay is very low. I took a pay cut when I got the job, but money wasn’t an issue for me, I needed something that was less stressful and a job that was flexible for me to finish classes.
    So Pros: people and benefits

Cons: pay is low, mold growing, company is not transparent, construction is messy, leaders that do not know what is going on. People are mostly promoted based on seniority not knowledge. Bad leaders are promoted that way.

    Pros

Working here is a great stepping stone

    Cons

In some departments you just do the experiment and are not allowed to analyze your data
    Bad managers
    Low pay

I have been working at INOVA Diagnostics full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Management and the coworkers are great. Lots of opportunities for continuing education if desired or getting involved in different projects across the company.

Healthcare, dental and vision benefits are great.

    Cons

People mostly get hired through temp agencies, which prevents you from having insurance while on "trial period".

The pay is less then in most similar companies across San Diego.

I worked at INOVA Diagnostics full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Great benefits and perks
    Open door policies
    Excellent safety protocols
    Caring and thoughtful HR team
Many opportunities to learn new skills
    Advancement opportunities
    Career Development

    Cons

People who work in labs tend to be negative (this is a generalization, not specific to Inova). It's difficult to stay positive in a lab with such prominent negative energy.

    Advice to Management

    Keep up the good work!

I have been working at INOVA Diagnostics full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Growing company with good leadership and career opportunities

    Cons

Plenty of people have complained of low compensation over the years. But overall, I feel the benefits + compensation are fair, and it's a good work environment/culture.

    Advice to Management

    Keep up the good work.

    Positive Outlook

    Pros

People there are great. There are opportunities to learn, but you really need to pursue them yourself. Bosses are approachable, and in most cases, very helpful.

    Cons

Advancement opportunities are fairly rare. They only seem to promote a select few, and, in many cases, the promotions seemed political rather than by merit. Because of the low pay, most people leave within a few years, so there are usually several new employees in each group.

    Pros

Fun environment, pretty relaxed bosses that don't get on you unless you are not getting your work done.

    Cons

Don't really want you to get promoted
