I have been working at IRESS full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good prospects in a growing, global organisation and excellent company culture

    Cons

Numerous acquisitions over the years in support of global growth mean that the company is still addressing integration aspects, but these are being addressed and collaboration is both encouraged and developing constantly.

    Advice to Management

    Keep up the excellent work.

    Pros

A major provider of trading and wealth management software platforms in Australia, with various shares of the markets in other countries via acquisition.

There are some strong people with whom you like to work.

Free private insurance after three years.
Stable company, so better job security.

    Multi-cultural (immigrant friendly)

May get a small amount of stock vesting each year, depending on your performance reviews.
Free coffee (coffee machine), fruits twice a week, and drinks on Friday afternoon.

The company has improved its internal communication platforms a lot in the past few years.

    Cons

No personal development investment except for a weekly internal 'lunch and learn' sessions, where you watch tech videos and have sandwiches most of the time. Most people get stuck in the C++ pit unless you invest in yourself with your money in your spare time.

Elit policy: most people get under-the-average salary except for some key business people. Most software developers and testers are second-class citizens. You're just nuts and bolts that they deem to be easily replaceable with low pay (thanks to the influx of tech immigrants, who don't have much choice when they are finding their first jobs).

    No much career opportunity.

    Advice to Management

Please invest in your developers and testers.

I worked at IRESS full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The Sydney office has a relaxed and friendly feel, with plenty of smart and hard-working people. There's also a reasonable selection of perks - coffee machine, friday beers, etc.

    Cons

The big difficulty at IRESS is senior management, who don't really give the impression that they know what to do to run a software development company. The middle managers, team leads and experienced line staff compensate well by doing what needs to be done, but there is a constant pressure of micro-management and under-resourcing and internal politics.

Senior management will also talk the talk of "good leadership", but this feels hollow when it becomes clear how many of them deceive and intimidate their own staff, out of plain self-interest.

    Advice to Management

Hold yourselves accountable for being honest, fair and treating staff with respect. It's up to you to speak up when other managers aren't doing their job well enough, or when they abuse their power. Nobody else is going to call out this destructive behaviour.

    Pros

    - great CEO, an excellent leader with vision and passion
    - many intelligent people work with
    - the company is forming a great culture
    - senior management pay more and more attention to mobility and flexibility, many employees will enjoy and sure will achieve more.

The company is transferring to a true global player, the culture has been changing to be more open, transparent, agile, collaborative, and very client focused.

    Cons

still transforming... depends how you look at it... it may not be a bad thing.
Lots of technology challenges and wicked problems to solve.

    Advice to Management

keep doing what you are doing. remove the barriers between regions and teams, strong culture to promote collaboration is great but may not be enough.
