I have been working at ITT Educational Services part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Great position for someone with a passion for teaching looking to supplement their income or gain teaching experience. Classes are pre-designed but there is just enough wiggle room to add your own flare. Great position for someone who is outgoing and can engage students in the classroom - you must be able to engage students to do well here. Students are a blast (for the most part). Faculty and staff create a positive work environment. I really enjoy teaching here.

    Cons

Very low pay for the amount of work you are required to put into the course. Between teaching a 5 hr class once a week, grading, , inventorying an setting up labs, printing course materials, putting together your lectures, taking online training courses and tracking student attendance/retention - you are easily making less then minimum wage.

    Advice to Management

Pay your adjuncts appropriately. I made more teaching one class as a TA in graduate school and only had 1/4 of the responsibilities.

I have been working at ITT Educational Services full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Far fewer hours than is typical in my field allows for a good work life balance. Responsibilities are clear and I'm allowed to work independently as long as work is accurate and on time. Benefits are above average. Pay is consistent with responsibilities not necessarily experience.

    Cons

Management tends to micromanage. It is difficult to advance because there are few opportunities to take on new challenges.

Work schedules are not flexible. A new flexible work schedule was implemented but was so tightly controlled that it did little to add flexibility.

There is a clear divide between long term employees and newly hired employees. The "Things have always been done this way" attitude makes enacting positive change difficult. New employees are often talked down to and criticized despite being more qualified than some of the more tenured employees. Many policies favor the more tenured employee and perpetuate this attitude and encourage people to leave around the 3 year mark.

There is also a clear divide between the schools and HQ staff. Many school employees operate in an us against them mentality and push back on following policies even if the policies is intended to comply with external regulations. These staff members are operating on a process mentality and lack the understanding of the reasons behind the policies.

    Advice to Management

Communication with employees at all levels would go a long way. The focus on compliance is important but unless the reasoning behind policies is clear employees will fill in their own reasons.

I worked at ITT Educational Services full-time

    Pros

There was definitely an opportunity to advance and be recognized, if you were willing to put forth the effort on a daily basis.

    Cons

Inconsistency in execution, despite the fact that there were a large number of employees - from the executive ranks to the lower ranks - who had long tenure with the company.

    Advice to Management

The revisions made to the company's operational model were showing a net positive effect - however, the unrelenting scrutiny and attacks against the sector ultimately proved unsurmountable.

    Pros

HQ staff get a free lunch offered 3 days a week (M W Th). tickets to the zoo, symphony on the prairie, hot coffee bar, Christmas celebration and many other nice things. Often you get a chance to donate and get access to colts or pacers tickets that go unused on a raffle. Good bunch of people to work with.

    Cons

As most larger organizations change slow, fair amount of the expected politics. IT is forward looking and open to change and new ideas

    Advice to Management

Give the middle management more flexibility and budget to execute without having everything approved top down

    Pros

Goal oriented company with a desire for growth that is attained through the development and education of others. Most employees are deditcated to the mission of providing quality educational programs.

    Cons

Very flat company that has little room for advancement at the corporate level. Advanced and specialized degrees are necessary for higher level positions.

    Advice to Management

Sr. Management tends to micormanage which can slow the process and they need to be more open to current trends in telecommuting and flexible work hours.
