    Pros

ITT Technical was not only a place to teach students but also for the teachers to learn as one of the SSTs at ITT I found it to be educational for everyone. It was a constant learning environment.

    Cons

Shut down for being a for private school that did not meet DOE restrictions

    Advice to Management

Re-organize, restructure, re-open even if it isn't under the ITT name the school was better than any government run community college.

    Pros

A college like ITT is better for adults than a traditional liberal-arts school. What combat vet would like a school that treats him like a teenager? At ITT we could teach based on Adult Learning Theory--because adults cannot learn in the way that traditional-age students do; every bit of information must relate somehow to adults' real-life concerns, or else they simply cannot remember it; there's no file for it in their memory. And ITT's numbers on retention, graduation rate, placement, and amount of tuition were very close to those of many nonprofit colleges. I taught the liberal-arts courses, and my students were overall just as bright as those at all the other colleges I have taught at. The business model for colleges is, in fact, more ethical than the still rather medieval model of many traditional schools. since they are, in fact, businesses, no longer a branch of a church.

    Cons

As an adjunct, I was paid badly, had neither benefits or security--but that's true for the adjuncts at every college in America, including Harvard. ITT was forced to close by the USDE, quite unfairly and arbitrarily, IMHO, Because of political pressure from the traditional colleges.
ITT, like most for-profit schools, could not get regional accreditation, because the traditional schools, who control that, impose requirements their own schools never had to meet.

    Advice to Management

Evaluate the graduates of for-profit colleges in terms of their own individual skills, not in terms of the stereotypes about their college. A former combat vet will have gotten a better eucation at a business-model school than he could possibly have gotten at a school focused on older teenagers.
