    Pros

People you meet at ITVS are passionate, interesting, and good at what they do. This makes for a rich work environment with people coming to work for all the right reasons. The content is fascinating and important, and makes it all worth it.

    Cons

Organization is exceptionally inwards looking, asking staff to spend an extraordinary amount of time working on institutional and structural improvements, to the detriment of the more visible work that needs to get done. Standing meetings quickly fill up your calendar so that you have less and less time to work on your projects.

    Advice to Management

There's no need for so much democratic decision making. Allow staffers do their core work and reduce time devoted to institutional brainstorming, annual planning, etc. Discourage micromanaging and trust that people can make decisions without layers upon layers of approvals and so many numbers of people weighing in. If managers can't be trusted to fully own their projects, then rehire and find people who can.

    Pros

Programs and Films are good products, worth supporting

    Cons

Management has no concept of how to foster positive communication with employees. Everything is done in group calls or meetings and you have to tiptoe around everone's egos to get any decision made. No respect for directly communicating with employees to ensure their concerns are heard.

    Advice to Management

Talk directly to employees and make them feel valued. Get rid of the clique -y, catty atmosphere and act professional. And empower employees to make decisions and take pride and ownership in their work.

I have been working at ITVS (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Interesting work producing indie documentary films that reflect diverse topics
Strong Management team who cares about the organization & their staff
New modern office space in SOMA
Really great people who care about social justice

    Cons

Managers/Directors/VPs never leave, so it's hard for junior staff to move up
    Communication could be better
    Salaries are non-profit ranges
    No bonuses

    Advice to Management

Work on communication that is less siloed and real.
Develop Career Development opportunities for junior staff

I worked at ITVS full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The majority of the people are amazing. The ones in the lower ranks, basically anyone not senior management is great. The mission of the company is fantastic and most folks that work there really believe in what they are doing and work hard to produce the best content. The benefits can't be beat and the location is pretty good.

    Cons

Senior management is a mess. They are terrible at retaining a solid workforce so the turnover is atrocious. There are always staff gaps so the workload can be overwhelming at times. The company is stuck in an outdated way of functioning so communication between departments and group projects can be disastrous and incredibly frustrating. And the pay is terrible. it's not enough to get by living in San Francisco and most employees have a second job in order to get by.

    Advice to Management

Management needs to completely rethink the way they run the company. Either they do a 180 or they get replaced. In my time there management was repeatedly told how to improve the culture and they never were able to make it work.

    Pros

Friendly environment, there's always free food and free events for all workers, not just just the paid employees

    Cons

Unpaid. There were quite a few slow days, sometimes communication came to a stand still.

    Pros

Even with all the red tape and political games, we are able to help the independents. That is really the only reason that most of us are here.

    Cons

Among the lack of good benefits, the low salaries, and the complete disregard for the employees, the downsides are many, but the biggest one is senior management, primarily the CEO and CFO. They are roadblocks.

    Advice to Management

Remove the CEO and replace her with someone with a backbone. Remove the CFO and replace her with someone with a heart and soul.

  8. "Great mission; poor management"

    StarStarStarStarStar
    Former Contractor - Anonymous Contractor
    Former Contractor - Anonymous Contractor

I worked at ITVS as a contractor

    Pros

The company has a spectacular mission - to fund independent filmmakers for public television. Inside the television world, it has a solid reputation. Funding comes from Congress so it's guaranteed every year. Good support for diversity.

    Cons

Very poor management - bureacracy and process become the end goal. Very complicated financial reporting demanded from producers. Inside the TV world, company has no brand, it's swallowed up by public television other strong brands. Company is very risk-averse - will not engage in controversial subjects or step on any toes, contrary to its previous reputation for "taking risks" and serving "underserved" communities.

    Advice to Management

Restructure senior management- bring back ITVS's former reputation of being risk-taking yet principled and fair.

    Pros

Company has a good reputation. Company given lots of money to filmmakers and producers. Mission-driven goals, not based on TV ratings not on popularity.

    Cons

Bad senior management. Operations and finance is incompetent. Senior management is invisible and paranoid, worried about the bottom line even though funding is guaranteed through Congress. Upper management works as a secret "cabal' keeping others uninformed and in the dark. Cannot criticize company or will be punished. Co. does not retain mid-level or junior employees, non-senior staff has low salaries.

    Advice to Management

Restructure - this company needs a refresh of senior management. Make smarter decisions about content and do not be afraid to fund good programs even though they might be controversial.
