Great benefits, and solid contributions to community help. Work is consistent and extra hours are rarely demanded. If you need work more management is thoughtful.

      Cons

Decentralized culture slows down a lot of positive change.

      Sourcing

      Pros

Sourcing has been a key element of ITW's enterprise strategy the last 4 years. Resources have been added, processes have been created and trained throughout the company, spend data has been aggregated into a corporate database that now gives visibility to our decentralized spend that wasn't available before. E sourcing tools have been added and investment in some systems to support sourcing has been made. The decentralized culture still exists and divisions still own sourcing decision rights and execution while colleagues connect across business unit boundaries to share information and leverage our knowledge and spend. The positive results have been material each year and there is a continued commitment for continuous improvement. The company has also invested in supply chain network planning resources which support comprehensive business reviews. With 84 divisions and hundreds of manufacturing plants and products ITW makes, there is opportunity to learn and contribute every day. I've been to over 100 plants and still have more to visit.

      Cons

ITW can be conservative. The decentralized culture preserves local decision making cross business unit collaboration on sourcing take a little longer and require lots of communication.

Average pay and benefits. Bad politics occur at the individual site level.

      Pros

Insurance program is good. Everything else is average. Not the best, but not the worst either.

      Cons

Decentralized company culture leads to unchecked abuses on the local site level, especially when HR presence is poor.

      Pros

Upbeat, professional yet casual, culture Entrepreneurial environment Unique in that it is a world class Fortune 200 corporation with a small business feel at the unit level

      Cons

Unpredictability of Customers and unreasonable demands they place upon business Concerted move by ITW Corporate to centralize everything, desptie their mantra of being "decentralized", this is causing ridiculous micro-management that is creating increased frustration at all levels

      Pros

As an intern I was given real world responsibility and meaningful assignments. Through this exposure I pertained transferable skills, and experiences that can only help me grow in my career. The decentralized environment, gave me the opportunity to work hands on with multiple projects and provide my feedback.

      Cons

I overall enjoyed my experience. However, interns must be comfortable working in a decentralized environment and being hands on within their role. Interns must understand that their work will matter and that they may have to juggle many projects. However, all of this will help you gain career building skills.

      Choose Your Own Adventure

      Pros

ITW's entrepreneurial spirit and lean workforce means it's not only possible to make an impact in whatever position you hold, it's expected. This is true at all levels of the organization - whether you are a contract employee, intern, or full-time employee, your voice matters. Additionally, its breadth and diversity of products leads to endless opportunities, especially if you are open to relocation. That said, there is no one ITW experience.

      Cons

Because ITW is so decentralized and much of the workforce has spent decades working at ITW, change can be a very slow process.

      Pros

Great Company with outstanding benefits package. Very forward thinking and extremely analytical in their approach to developing and growing business.

      Cons

Although they operate a decentralized business model, the Corporate office is continually inventing new reports and measurement metrics to keep track of this behemoth of a company, resulting in a culture of stress and overload at the middle and senior management levels.

      Megalithic, faceless, multinational corporation.

      Business Outlook

      Pros

Benefits are good. Pay and working conditions depend on your position and the business unit you hire into. Some business units are OK, some are not. Politics and luck will play a great part in advancement.

      Cons

Though the overall business model is decentralized, major policy decisions are made by people in Illinois. This means that people who have no experience in your particular industry will make sweeping policy changes that the people who actually do the work must live with. The basic problem is a cookie cutter approach to all business decisions. If you hire into a newly acquired business unit, you may find considerable turmoil and disruption as ITW executives remold the culture in their image.
