I worked at IUPUI full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great learning experience. Opportunity to work with multiple disciplines. Good for people who wish to pursue a career in academia. Chance to publish at lots of conferences and journals.

    Cons

Projects and work dependent on funding from various sources. Package may be a little lesser than industry but that is the case with academia.

    Advice to Management

More collaborations with external funding sources should be taken up. Putting the "grant writing" responsibility only on faculty is not the only way to go.

I have been working at IUPUI full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

IUPUI has a positive work environment. Working in education means always pushing forward and improving. The benefits are unheard of in the corporate environment. 30 days of PTO plus paid holidays.

    Cons

Working for an on profit organization means you do not get paid as much as you would in a corporate environment, however, the benefits balance that out.

I have been working at IUPUI full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

excellent PTO program, employer sponsored pension plan and matching 401k, reasonably priced medical plans (and many to choose from), tuition deferrals for employees

    Cons

Very outdated computer technology and support, lots of red tape preventing efficiency in many departments, lack of concern about employee development or retention, little sensed of ownership among employees and management, many managers have little or no training in management and management skills are not developed or emphasized.

    Advice to Management

More focus on using employee's strengths and developing employees rather than just filling positions, more opportunities for advancement, more opportunities for bonuses or additional responsibilities for additional pay
