I have been working at Idaho Power full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

I have worked in several other companies and Idaho Power is the best. The leadership has high integrity and truly cares about employees. There is great work/life balance and employees are all very supportive of each other. Pay and benefits are very competitive as an overall package.

    Cons

Regulated companies have unique challenges and it isn't for everyone. Historically at times the company was stuck in the mode of maintaining the status quo rather than being open to new ideas or ways of doing things, but that seems to be changing.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the focus on leadership development and not just technical expertise.

I have been working at Idaho Power full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Great company with good work life balance. Plenty of opportunities to pursue your interests

    Cons

Can't think of any compared to the places I have previously worked. Great location in Boise. An up and coming city

    Advice to Management

Spend more time talking with employees and less time in meetings. Limit the number of initiatives to a realistic number

I worked at Idaho Power full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Good people who can still remember good ol' times, support of work life balance and professional development. Tenured folks who are optimists.

    Cons

Misguided corporate initiatives, miopic and micromanaging senior management. Directors who do not have the backgrounds needed to lead in roles with inflated titles. Promoting lean business has burned out some of the brightest, best and hardworking people at the company.

    Advice to Management

Trust your people and create more doers vs. overseers, appoint a system to make HR a safe place, remove any corporate services from HR. HR is corrupt, promotes inbreeding and has placed the least qualified people at the helm of their own organization.

I have been working at Idaho Power full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Talented and hardworking employees. Generous retirement with pension and 401k. Good pay for the Valley, great pay outside of it. A good amount of time off earned.

    Cons

Myopic management. The vaunted work/life balance of Idaho Power is a myth in IT unless you're a manager. Work culture is about CYA. Nothing is approved by management unless there is a fall guy in place. Vacation can and has been cancelled. Management is growing, the actual amount of people doing the work is shrinking.

    Advice to Management

Hire enough people to do the job right. Get rid of underperforming employees, less management and red tape.

    I worked at Idaho Power

    Pros

    - Stability for most positions - Great work life balance and working hours - Compensation is close to market for many positions - Many great and talented people who are enjoyable to work with

    Cons

    - The same great and talented people are being psychologically beat to a pulp by incompetent managers - Always being treated like a 10 year old - Micro management at every level - HR is feared and has too much power - Limited career opportunities unless you say "yes" to everything - Company does not value skill and education

    Advice to Management

Please pay attention to the games your middle managers are playing with HR and people's careers. Some of your best and brightest people are being chased out of the company while the trouble makers remain and perpetuate their games. It's easy to keep the lights on today, but what happens when your stakeholders change and your business environment changes? You're going to need those skilled people you chased away.

    Cons

Very conservative approach to technology. Risk adverse utility, so the pace can be frustrating.

    Advice to Management

Innovate! A lot of employees have great ideas listen with an open mind and take a chance on some of them....
