    Pros

Amazingly supportive management, great work environment, engaging and exciting work

    Cons

Maybe gives weaker preforming employees too much runway.

    Advice to Management

Make the tough decision to let some of the slackers move on.

    Pros

Incredible space, great benefits, free food! Worker community is committed and nice.

    Cons

Mr. Gross' commitment to the idea of being a "parallel" entrepreneur means that virtually every butterfly gets chased - very difficult to stay focused on core strategy; small ideas are treated like large ideas; large ideas are nonexistent. Co has the reputation for chewing through managers - people get frustrated and leave because sr mgt behavior swings wildly between being totally unsupportive to micromanagement.

    Advice to Management

Focus on something big. And trust the bright people you hire to actually do their jobs. Make values more than quotes written on the walls.

I worked at Idealab full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

This place seems great, at least in the beginning. One of the first innovation tech incubators in Los Angeles, this place has seen its share of successes and failures. People are smart, cool startup environment (desks made of filing cabinets and halfcut doors), and lots of positivity.

    Cons

It seems like employment here is a mix of a rotating door and musical chairs. People come and go, and come back again. Maybe the people move from job to job due to opportunities, but it basically seems things are always in constant motion. So if you like a place to be a little stable, this is not it. Also, in addition to the rotating doors, you never know who may end up working next to you, personality-wise.

    Pros

This incubator company has all the start-ups working in clusters in large open spaces. This makes for great networking around the clusters and in the many common areas throughout (coffee bars, game room, libraries, etc.). Good benefits packages. Location in Oldtown Pasadena is nice as well.

    Cons

9 to 5 casual environment sometimes does not lend itself to the kind of progress start-ups need to make so early on.

    Advice to Management

Encourage an earlier start to the day.

    I worked at Idealab full-time

    Pros

Great environment, things got done quickly and you were given the resources you needed to do your job. The people are great and very smart about the internet business.

    Cons

Not much chance of moving up in the company. At time it got monotonous with doing the same thing and handling the same issues every day was a bit boring.

  10. "Consistent workload in a fast-paced environment where company development doesn't seem to learn from past mistakes."

I worked at Idealab (More than 3 years)

    Pros

I learned how to be nimble, working with a wide variety of companies on projects that had tight turnaround times. There is a rush that comes with working on start-up ventures. I was able to meet a number of great, smart people - project managers, developers, designers, etc.

    Cons

The company supports the creation and development of other companies. You can work on interesting concepts and projects, but there is essentially no opportunity for advancement within Idealab itself.
