Pros

Good potential for growth, good opportunities (i.e., conferences, meetings, group activities, outreach), staff members are passionate about the cause, amazing benefits, even in the first year of employment

Cons

Unpleasant, arrogant attitude of executive director (that in turn feeds off on other staff members to make for an overall unpleasant work environment), absolutely zero room for error or learning curve for anything, which manifests itself to what the director deems as incompetent and untrustworthy work ethic, people take themselves too seriously, which manifests into arguments and accomplishing little, too many meetings

Pros

I met some amazing people while working there, who were truly dedicated to the work they did.

Cons

Those amazing people I mentioned ALL left during my time there, and many expressed feeling demoralized, burned out, and humiliated. Several were seasoned professionals who were respected by their subordinates. Things I witnessed while working there: managers shouting at employees, using profanity and sexual comments that they thought were funny (honestly don't know how the executive director has not been sued for harassment by now), micromanaging to the Nth degree, expecting low-level staff to work 50+ hours with no overtime or comp time, and a general atmosphere of fear. There are so many other non-profits to chose from, please do your homework and really assess whether you want to work in this type of environment. Remember that no one should put up with abuse at work.

Pros

Working with people/community No one day is the same and the helping people can be rewarding Employees are very friendly and welcoming They may occasionally let employees leave a few hours early on the day before a holiday (christmas/thanksgiving)

Cons

Turnover rate is incredibly HIGH (average of 1 to 2 years) Compensation is not good at all (considering all the responsibility, hours worked, and expectations of work) unprofessionalism from executive leaders and management (constant use of profanity and gossip) Executive leaders like to put pressure and use fear to control people Weak infrastructure and small human resources department Favoritism Management is very close minded and they love to MICROMANAGE employees Workload is huge (you do the work of two people, therefore burnout comes fairly quickly) 60hrs work weeks and they don't compensate your time or flex your time very limited office space and not conducive working enviroment Offer very little training to employees and have very, very high expectations of performance No room for growth or advancement (small non-profit)
