I have been working at Illinois Department of Human Rights full-time for more than a year

    Pros

The mission is good, if the support were there.

    Cons

Internal ageism, racism and bullying from the top on down. Training can be grossly different depending on age, sex, military status and race. Training needed to do the job is less accessible even if begged for. Training based on protected group may very within the same job title by up to 6 months. Benefits are under constant attack by politicians, toxic environment.

    Advice to Management

Comply with contractual law and the state and federal guidelines that the agency is supposed to enforce.

I have been working at Illinois Department of Human Rights full-time

    Pros

The benefits of working for the state are very good. PTO is average in comparison.

    Cons

You cannot use your PTO or sick leave during your 6 month probationary period, procedures are not laid out and things consistently change depending on who you ask or who reviews your work.

I have been working at Illinois Department of Human Rights

    Pros

Working for an agency like this provides a good sense of job security. Steady pay and benefits. This particular agency is a very small one, which gives it a certain degree of insulation from the politics that run the state.

    Cons

It still is a state agency, so it is impossible to escape all the politics. Every time a governor changes, there is the chance that any or all of the senior staff will be replaced. (That could be good or bad, but at the moment I like all the senior staff, so I wouldn't want them changed any time soon.)
