I have been working at Illinois State full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

A great place to work with very good benefits. Administration is very supportive and most positions including mine have a great deal of latitude on methods. Opportunities to be innovative and customer service excellence is well recognized. Working conditions are usually very good. Real opportunities to shine

    Cons

The negatives are really due to State funding decreases. Salaries are relatively stagnent and are not reflective of performance. Last five years have seen salary increases of about 2 percent per year, with little varience for performance. You have to change jobs to get that recognition. Also the choices are a basic 401K with good contributions, but you have to invest extra to retire, or a very good State pension system where the plan is 80 percent underfunded and subject to constant threats of reform/cuts/default.

    Advice to Management

Continue great support for employees. Consider changes to compensation recognition for top performers.

I have been working at Illinois State part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

-School comes first so getting time off is/was easy.
    -Worked around my schedule.
-Allowed time off during finals or project deadlines for classes
-Easy work. They expect students to not have experience but I had years of actual job experience.
    -Summer/weekends off.
-Studied during downtime (depends on where you work)
    -Friendly coworkers. Really casual environment.
-Dress code is casual for student workers or business casual for interns.
    -Low stress.
-Management very easy to talk to and understanding.

    Cons

-Low pay. Min wage for students, higher for interns/grad assistants but nothing livable.
-State funding might restrict how much you can work if you want more hours. Not ISU's fault, just a heads up.

    Advice to Management

Let people know when bad things happen (lack of raises, ect) it is not ISU's fault. It is state funding.

I have been working at Illinois State part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great benefits compared to most employment opportunities.
Most people you work with are great, and because the teams are usually small, you get very close.

    Cons

In turn for great benefits, pay is usually less than the average for that job.
IT Management is poor at making decisions for the long term, and thus have caused many developers to seek employment elsewhere.

    Advice to Management

Not everyone that is a great employee will be a great manager. A manager, however, should have experience in the job they are managing.

I worked at Illinois State full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Was given the necessary guidance to develop both professionally and personally. Furthermore, the culture is great.

    Cons

The only con to working at Illinois State is the low pay. I don't know if I would consider this a con because the cost of living in the area is relatively inexpensive.
