I worked at Illinois State Treasurer full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Lots of liberties/empowerments, flexibility of scheduling

    Cons

Work with lots of people that have been there forever and have no credentials for the roles they are in. Unfortunately, the new leadership is more politically focused than serving the residents of Illinois.

    Advice to Management

Utilize the HR structure in place and hold individuals accountable for their jobs.

I worked at Illinois State Treasurer full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Pension potential if you become vested after 5 years
    Government Holidays

    Cons

Elected position which means new management every election if a regime change.
Each new Treasurer comes in with ideas that they will change things and very little change occurs.
Over 11 years and saw very few people get promoted from within.

    Advice to Management

Consider promoting long term employees, not new hires with little experience.

I got to work with a great group of people who actually cared about the state. We were also given an opportunity to work on some pretty amazing projects.

    Cons

Like with any government job, their was a lot of dead weight.

    Advice to Management

Try to keep up with the times with respect to technology.

    Pros

The Giannoulias administration went a long way to bring integrity to the office, but considering how far it needed to progress, there's still lots of room for improvement.

    Cons

Leaves you scratching your head to wonder how some people managed to get into the positions they're in. Plenty of job/salary security if you're a union employee as with any other state agency.

    Advice to Management

Performance evaluations: Please don't have an employee complete their own annual evaluation - actually give them feedback on their work!
