I worked at Illinois Tollway part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Sometimes they gave out free food.

    Cons

Dealing with angry customers every call was stressful. People were getting fired everyday for no real reason. They refused to make people full time just so they wont have to pay for benefits. Only gave one 15 minute break for a 6 hour work shift. Training was bad.

I worked at Illinois Tollway full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    1. Great benefits

    2. I felt that if you didnt get involved with all the drama and did a good job that you had a chance to succeed,

    Cons

    1. Incredibly dangerous out on those roads. And other staff take unnecessary risks to get the job done and expect you to do the same.

    2. Uneducated staff and very cliquey. If you get on someones bad side you will be on everyones bad side and face a hostile work environment.

    3. Little to no training.

    4. Lack of professionalism with staff and supervisors.

    5. A lot of lazy people. The people who do work are tasked to continue to work harder while the known lazy people are given easy jobs. Otherwise nothing would get done.

    6. Incredible terrible shifts. Expect to work there for 7-8 years before you get enough seniority to work a normal day shift Monday-Friday. Otherwise you will be on weekends second and third shift.

    Advice to Management

    1. Stop the political BS.

    2. Explain in better detail how the bidding system works for shifts.

I worked at Illinois Tollway full-time

    Pros

Has the potential to be better if they would employ more educated, skilled and professional managers and staff.

    Cons

Very political. Treat employees like crap. Salaries are below market for staff except management level staff.

    Advice to Management

Treat employees with respect and stop allowing management to bully them. Train management team to be more professional and less catty and political.

    "Great employees-Frequent executive level turnover"

    Pros

The people are friendly and dedicated to the safety of the motoring public and efficient transportation of goods. As opposed to other state agencies, their budget is not appropriated but derived from the collection of tolls and sale of bonds, so there is financial stability. Good benefits and long-term employees knowledgeable.

    Cons

The executive level is appointed so when there is a change in state leadership, there are changes in policy/program implementation and overall vision of the agency. Professional growth within a department is limited. Consultants make up a large portion of the professional staff so there is no incentive to develop employee skills or into management. Some departments are much more professionally and well manged then others. There is an obvious gap in management skill/development among departments.

    Advice to Management

Promote within and proactively offer professional development for the entire employee staff. Implement 360 evaluations so that poor management can be identified and remedied. Require written processes/procedures for all departments with verification from audit resources so change does not equal chaos. Evaluate when to use consultants versus employees. There are consultants doing the same work for well over 5 years costing the agency twice the rate of an employee. When the consultant leaves, the knowledge leave with them. Require all departments to provide a staffing plan to address gaps/training needs so that the lengthy state employment process is not an excuse to obtain consultant services.

I have been working at Illinois Tollway full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    Great benefits, not much else.

    Cons

Hardly any internal promotions, most people are there because of favors. Anytime there is a new Governor all upper management is fired and replaced by either Republican or Democrat cronies. There is no culture or value at all.
