I have been working at Illinois Wesleyan full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

This is a warm, close knit SLAC with a strong culture of faculty governance and individualized student attention. The campus is beautiful and the people are kind and collaborative. The tenure and promotion process is pretty transparent and junior faculty are well mentored both within academic units and across campus.

    Cons

A strong culture of faculty governance requires a heavy service load-- you get out what you put in-- and individualized student attention takes time and energy. The faculty includes some very productive scholars, but it's more common for faculty energy to focus on campus-centered teaching and service activities post-tenure.

Like many small liberal arts schools, resources are stretched tightly and deployed creatively.

I worked at Illinois Wesleyan full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

You'll work with some incredible people who are very dedicated to higher education. It's an amazing school with fantastic students. President Wilson was a great President and Eric Jensen has big shoes to fill.

    Cons

Low pay compared to peer schools, no raises. Very little chance of advancement, even after many years on the job. Inconsistent hiring and promotion standards. Propensity to keep toxic employees at the expense of other staff.

    Advice to Management

Invest in your staff. Promote from within. Take a stand against workplace bullying and harassment and remove employees who create hostile work environments. Reward loyalty.

I worked at Illinois Wesleyan part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    Flexible hours
    Manageable workload
    Friendly coworkers
    Good pay
A lot depends on who your advising professor is, so choose wisely

    Cons

The campus is absolutely dead over the summer. Rooming isn't awesome, although it is all paid for. Try to get a job at saga, because you get free food which really cuts down on the cost

    Advice to Management

I had a really good experience with my manager. However, he could have been more open to suggestions from his assistants
