I have been working at Illumina full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Nice location
    Attractive campus
Good technology (that may become commoditized soon)

    Cons

    Very siloed culture
A lot of trash talks, emotional bullying and turf wars
Immature and entitled middle managers that lack integrity
Managerial incompetency leads to a toxic/hostile environment
Managers don't want to hear feedback from employees/customers, and are fast to kill the messenger
    Managers play favorites
Lack of processes managers are supposed to follow; available processes are barely followed
    Constant change of directions
Every manager in marketing thinks they know marketing, with no competency standards, no marketing processes and no real marketing in place
No compassion for and no acknowledgement of organizational challenges
    Non-existent people and career development

    Advice to Management

Refresh your knowledge of the company values or update them if they got obsolete
Really think through and act on the iPower surveys you run every six months

I have been working at Illumina full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Innovative, fast paced, adaptable; management is very transparent; the products are very exciting and the company as a whole has huge potential

    Cons

They just announced that they are cutting bonuses. I am a new employee that left a great company to be part of something amazing and it has not lived up to the hype.

    Advice to Management

Do not cut bonuses. This will have a very negative effect on current employees and prospects. This was a horrible move.

    Pros

Culture is phenomenal. Everyone wants to help the company succeed. People are very friendly and the work is extremely rewarding. Perks offered are terrific.

    Cons

Work Life Balance is challenging. Too many priorities and not enough prioritization. Management needs to recognize that growth has to be sustained through hiring more people not just through overloading the existing population.

I have been working at Illumina full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Nice campus, iCafe, company parties are fun, stock is going up, some nice people

    Cons

If you love working then this is the place for you because you'll be here morning, noon, and night. La Jolla in the dark will become a very familiar sight. It's not just the aggressive schedules that will keep you at work. A good part of the work will be created by the overall lack of planning of the projects that you'll work on. This is kind of amazing since Illumina is filled to rafters with middle managers. I guess they spend so much time falling over each other that they don't have time to manage anything.

The cherry on top of all of this is that your hard work is unlikely to be rewarded. Illumina makes no bones about the fact that it will not give internal candidates preference in hiring for open positions. It's quite frustrating to see external job postings for positions that you (and likely many of your colleagues) are qualified for. The best strategy for advancement at Illumina is to do good work, leave for a few years, and then come back at a higher level.

I have been working at Illumina full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Cafeteria, RSU (stock), company is doing very well

    Cons

Schedules are unrealistic, work/life balance suffers greatly, bloated middle management that slows everything down, lots of silos, and a growing number of people who don't seem to have a clear function in the organization

    Advice to Management

Illumina should be one of the best places in San Diego to work. It's not.

    Pros

Cutting edge technology. Name brand recognition. Geographically small territories. Pay is competitive.

    Cons

Extremely political. Lots of blame game, while not supporting field employees. No trust in employees by management. Promotion only happens for older pre-sequencing employees, regardless of performance. Customers also feel alienated by rapid product changes.

    Advice to Management

Fire the support management. Theyve created a toxic environment.
