I have been working at Illumina full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

-technology and mission make you proud to work there
    -very sharp coworkers
-really impressed with new the CEO (Francis) and his ACTUAL committment to increasing diversity at the upper management level of the company
-there are some great teams in the company, but varies by group

    Cons

-terrible middle management, lie about advancement opportunities at hire
-feels very corporate and raises/promotions are very hard to come by
-internal movement only possible if your management doesn't try to sabotage your chances

    Advice to Management

Get your story straight and stop making promises you have no intention on keeping. Stop trying to push your own agenda to get ahead and instead lead so that the whole team gets ahead. Listen to your employees and actually do something instead of just trying to check off a box for your personal goals.

I worked at Illumina as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

Work is fast paced and interesting, you get to solve very complex problems and learn a lot. You are also improving healthcare in the long term.

    Cons

Illumina doesn't really convert contractors and bottom line pay for us is pretty low considering the sector and geographic area.

    Advice to Management

Convert your contractors! We know the technology and processes more than any outsider.

    Engineering team is loyal
    Creating scalable systems

    Cons

    Inexperienced managers
    Immature processes
    Senior leadership hands-off

I worked at Illumina as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

beautiful campus, most of the people there are really awesome, a bit fast-paced but depending on the person that might be difficult

    Cons

treat contractors kinda badly (hold off on converting to full-time even when you completed your contract, not very inclusive of contractors, if site space is impacted usually contractors get the short end of the stick--parking lot temporarily closed so made contractors park off-site and shuttle to building), not a great job of on-boarding new hires, working in a very large department can feel disjointed because there isn't much of an effort to be cohesive (ie very cliquey)

    Advice to Management

    encourage growth of your employees

I have been working at Illumina full-time

    Pros

Great company and benefits, they have a lot of events for their employees

    Cons

The work itself is more manufacturing than any sort of research. Really all about knowing the right people if you want to move up.

    Pros

Cafe, starbucks, free coffee, food trucks, peet's coffee, some of the people, courtyards, has both a small company feel with large company benefits

    Cons

    -Unreasonable expectations set by managers
-Not enough research or testing done before changes are made
-Way too much condescension and humiliation used to "motivate" employees
-Managers act stressed, work over weekends to guilt their employees to work more and slam them with more work
-No reasonable expectations of work life balance, you have to be strong and confident to resist all the tactics they play to get you to work more
-Poor communication and lack of structure on pay increases
-The company and management are constantly coming up with new ways to measure if you are working but that takes time away from work
-Management doesn't acknowledge enough of the work you have done but constantly looking for something yet to do. Makes tou feel unappreciated and that one could burn out. You have to remind them of all the great things you have done. They emphasize too much of the negative and not build enough on your strengths
-Some managers hover too much, watch employees rather than work

    Advice to Management

-Intelligent people need autonomy, time to think, and good feedback
-Test and do more research before changing direction so quickly on process or applications

I have been working at Illumina full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Great product, people are dedicated to getting them out on time. Work life balance, very flexible hours, great benefits and PTO. Lots of loyalty and longevity.

    Cons

They've made some status changes and got some growing-up to do in Hayward. Yert they're holidng on to archaic systems and software.
Some folks are working their tails off to reach goals and deadlines and foster change while others seem to get paid just for showing up and socializing all day. They've been getting away with it for years so why change?

    Advice to Management

Why keep these ineffective people around? They manage only to distract and disrupt others that WANT to get their work done. They've proven they can't or won't adapt to new requirements. They're making the job harder for others.
Invest in some current process/operating software and some people who know what they're doing and are not afraid to enforce new programs.
