I have been working at Illumina full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

As a software developer, we continuously try to be on the cutting edge. I don't deal with a lot of legacy software since our company is still fairly new. Culture is nice. Lots of intramural sports, clubs, and happy hours. It's great socializing with everyone. The campus is beautiful - Love that there is a gym and an amphitheater! Some departments are more relaxed than others; mine lets me work from home from time to time, and work around my busy schedule.

    Cons

We are expanding really quickly and direct management as well as upper management is still trying to figure this out. It's also harder to meet people now that we are so large, so culture definitely still has a lot of figuring out to do. There are a lot of meetings at my department, which can hold you back from doing your work.

    Advice to Management

I know that we are growing, but don't forget about us!

I have been working at Illumina full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Deeply held mission, amazing products, bright people, great customers. Have had some recent turnover of sr. Executives who had stayed beyond their expiration date, so that's a good thing. Love former and current CEO.

    Cons

Run too lean for employees to performe at their best. Not enough women in leadership positions. Upward mobility only for those with the right relationships. Personal workspace size shrinking to much for productivity to thrive.

    Advice to Management

Hire the people we need. Please don't continue to shrink the workspaces. Help to educate sr. Execs of their blind spots. Give more employees true career development opportunities.

I have been working at Illumina full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

I am so proud to work for this company. The mission we have to improve human health is the belief of every individual in this company. Great team, great people, sense of pride of every year being named amongst the 10 top innovative companies.

    Cons

Getting too big which has a downfall of losing our culture. We are hiring lots of Executives from outside and there is always the fear of whose culture will the company take illumina or all the people coming from outside.

    Advice to Management

Keep our culture alive and listen to you employees closer to your customers.

I have been working at Illumina full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Great benefits, friendly young environment, flexible work environment, and great starting PTO/company holidays

    Cons

Less competitive salary and many people work a lot of over time without extra benefits

    Pros

Perks were numerous with free lunches every other Wednesday. RSU's for senior and above. Not too much overtime except at end of month.

    Cons

Expectations were set very high. In some cases they were unrealistic and management would call you out for almost anything.

I have been working at Illumina full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Rapidly growing company, strong market position, stable

    Cons

Limited upward mobility, company tends to hire from outside sources rather than promote from within.

    Advice to Management

The company claims to emphasize internal promotion, but does little to act on it.

  10. "Great Company. Too reactive."

I have been working at Illumina full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Innovative company that is accomplishing greats things. The people I work with are the nicest people I have ever worked with and I enjoy working with them.

    Cons

Extremely top heavy. Managers and below get bogged down with busy work on a consistent basis. Makes it difficult to add value. The promotion cycle seems to be slow. I haven't seen merit based promotion since I've been here. Promotion seems to come with the normal cycle or reactive to attrition.

    Advice to Management

It's important to control opex but make sure you aren't biting your nose to spite your face. An extra lower level head can free up managers time and avoid much costlier mistakes.

    Pros

Access to cutting-edge technology. Everyone is really eager to bring you up to speed on projects and you are given lots of resources and tools for problem solving.

    Cons

There's a sharp learning curve. The first few weeks are pretty overwhelming. Contract pay is not that great and the benefits barely get you by.

    Advice to Management

Continue with your open discussion of improvement. Any questions are answered in a timely manner and in depth detail is given.
