I have been working at Illumina as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

Intelligent, inspired, hard working people. Great company culture with lots of inspiration and innovative projects

    Cons

Very difficult to grow as a contractor, always pulling teeth to get the next extension and moved around a lot which makes it hard to show real competency.

    Advice to Management

Be better to contractors, they want to work hard for you but it is difficult with no incentive or job security. Stop restructuring so often and fight for your teams, don't just take the top down word from management as gospel.

    Advice to Management

Try to communicate more between different groups.

I worked at Illumina full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Big data challenges. Collegial feel. Smart employees. Some of the most interesting technical challenges I have faced. Cool place to work because you don't often help cure diseases as a technical person.

    Cons

Operations constantly under staffed. No work-life balance at current staffing levels. Growing so fast that lack of parking is a persistent problem.

    Advice to Management

Hire more people. Listen to your senior employees.

I have been working at Illumina full-time

    Pros

Opportunity to work with smart colleagues on interesting problems. In general a good collaborative atmosphere with a lack of big egos, at least in the technical area I am familiar with.

    Cons

Outside its undoubted comfort zone of producing and selling instruments and reagents the company's sense of direction is less sure footed. Confusing business unit structure means communication poor and has led to territorial behavior, not-invented-here syndrome, duplication of work etc.

Corporate information systems are terrible and waste employees' time on a grand scale.

Best hope of progressing beyond Director or so is to be parachuted in from elsewhere.

    Advice to Management

The strategic direction coming from CEO level is clear enough but does not get translated into clear actions after filtering through the middle management noise layer. Clearer demarcation of responsibilities at that level would help.

I worked at Illumina (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Pretty good technology, not the highest end nor lowest, and best support structure(Internal Resources, Documentation, Inventory, Training) I've ever seen from a company. Has the California take care of its people feel, but this seems to be changing. Lots of opportunity to grow. It's nearly impossible to fail at the job unless you are completely unqualified. Illumina is going to be an industry player for awhile but is running into headwinds. Wouldn't be surprised if a buyout happens. If you are on the right team than this would be a great experience.

    Cons

The biggest con is Illumina's own success unfortunately; integrity has been outpaced by growth/greed. Very top heavy management structure in place so politics permeates everything. Mid/low level managers seem to be out for themselves and that culture trickles down to the field. Performance takes a backseat to who will advocate for you so people focus on playing the game(the official term used is "visibility"). People will literally lie and spread rumors if they feel it will advance their standing, if that means stepping on another's neck in the process than its OK, hence the integrity/professionalism issues.

    Advice to Management

Time to cut the fat and create a culture of integrity. Mid/low level managers need a reboot and reality check on actual work, still unsure what they do aside from pulling metrics and playing politics rather than encouraging professional behaviors amongst their teams. Illumina has a near monopoly in the sequencing market, customers aren't going anywhere, just a reminder.

    Pros

The smartest and the best of the best scientist are there. Everyone wants to do the right thing.

    Cons

Too many high priority projects, timelines are too aggressive and no work and life balance.
    Very top heavy
Billions of dollars in revenue are made but goes to executives.

    Advice to Management

Management needs to set more realistic timelines and realize that Research Use Only products are very different than products that will be used for Diagnostics requiring FDA approval.
