I have been working at Illumina full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The people here are definitely the best part of the company. We're working on new, interesting, and impactful technologies. Campus is beautiful, city is beautiful.

    Cons

Incredibly fast paced. If you can't keep up, you're likely to struggle.
Some workplace politics can get tiresome.
Work-life balance is much better than it has been in the past, but is a continuing struggle.

I have been working at Illumina full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Great product, people are dedicated to getting them out on time. Work life balance, very flexible hours, great benefits and PTO. Lots of loyalty and longevity.

    Cons

They've made some status changes and got some growing-up to do in Hayward. Yert they're holidng on to archaic systems and software.
Some folks are working their tails off to reach goals and deadlines and foster change while others seem to get paid just for showing up and socializing all day. They've been getting away with it for years so why change?

    Advice to Management

Why keep these ineffective people around? They manage only to distract and disrupt others that WANT to get their work done. They've proven they can't or won't adapt to new requirements. They're making the job harder for others.
Invest in some current process/operating software and some people who know what they're doing and are not afraid to enforce new programs.

I have been working at Illumina full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

No worries about layoffs. My current management team is awesome - they listen, take actions as they can, and don't micromanage.

    Cons

Getting a new building up and running shows how inexperienced or naïve our decision makers were 2-3 years ago. The choice of contractors and architects obviously didn't bring their A game as the manufacturing areas are designed as an office, rather than as a 3 shift production facility.

    Advice to Management

Rethink the totally open office plan and maybe have departmental-dedicated and supervisor meeting spaces, instead of a rolling file cabinet with a padded top.

I have been working at Illumina full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    - Incredibly meaningful mission and work
    - Fast-paced, but good work-life balance, for the most part
    - Lots of growth means lots of opportunity, though this seems to vary by department
    - Great amenities, at least for San Diego headquarters
    - Opportunity to work in a global, and growing company. There's lots of learning going on at Illumina!

    Cons

    - Growing very quickly, which can lead to some chaos and pain points
    - Still need to iron out some parts of how we operate, there are definitely plenty of inefficiencies that can be tackled
    - Sometimes can feel a bit political, though my group is pretty good about not being political
    - Need more investment in people, tools, and resources to continue to scale to the next level

    Advice to Management

    - Continue to dig in to understand what pain points your employees are experiencing
    - Ensure that the values are echoed throughout the company
    - Make sure we continue to pay attention and support our regional counterparts, we need them to succeed!
    - Keep pushing on us to innovate and grow

I have been working at Illumina full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

As a software developer, we continuously try to be on the cutting edge. I don't deal with a lot of legacy software since our company is still fairly new. Culture is nice. Lots of intramural sports, clubs, and happy hours. It's great socializing with everyone. The campus is beautiful - Love that there is a gym and an amphitheater! Some departments are more relaxed than others; mine lets me work from home from time to time, and work around my busy schedule.

    Cons

We are expanding really quickly and direct management as well as upper management is still trying to figure this out. It's also harder to meet people now that we are so large, so culture definitely still has a lot of figuring out to do. There are a lot of meetings at my department, which can hold you back from doing your work.

    Advice to Management

I know that we are growing, but don't forget about us!
