I have been working at Illumina as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

Very intellectual people here, and most of them are not the stereotypical science geek. They have a lot of creative and unique ideas that make things really interesting.

    Cons

Moving up to the next 'tier' is nearly impossible without a PhD. If you want to work here in science, you'll need a Ph.D or try to move into engineering (a master's is recommended).

    Advice to Management

Work on a better contract policy. Not guaranteeing a job in the future is not cool. Let the worker know that a job will be contract to hire or not, instead of playing the "let's just wait until the next year" game.

I have been working at Illumina full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

-We are working on technologies and products that have the opportunity to positively affect human health and health care in a huge way.
-For the most part, you have opportunities to move around to different departments.
-I feel a lot of pride working for a company that is head and shoulders (and more) above the next competitors
    -Work-life balance is reasonable
    -Total compensation is exceptional
    -Great campus and amenities

    Cons

-At the end of the day, this is a public company so the bottom line and profits seem to be at the forefront; as important or more important than the feeling of the purpose of transforming healthcare
-Not all groups off the same level of mobility as far as if you want to move to a different department
-Deadline pressures often result in suboptimal choices in design/implementation and quality is negatively affected
-As with most bigger companies, you have to deal with politics, favoritism, etc

    Advice to Management

I would really like to see more realistic deadlines or more resources where we feel like we can actually implement high quality products that are scalable.

I have been working at Illumina full-time

    Pros

Fast paced environment, bleeding edge technology and lots of room for career growth. They have great benefits and its a really nice campus.

    Cons

There are a lot of politics that can get in the way of doing things the right way. Over promising is a common theme and that can cause trouble delivering on time and forcing you to work long hours to meet deadlines.

    Advice to Management

Need to be more concerned with ensuring that the deadlines are within reach of what is possible given our resources. Also, trying to just throw more resources at a problem doesn't necessarily mean it will get done sooner.

I worked at Illumina as an intern (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Illumina first of all, is a truly adding so much to this world. It was so fulfilling to work for a company that you know is saving lives every day. They are really revolutionizing preventative healthcare, which is so amazing. Overall, I think they treat their employees very well. Most employees work pretty long hours because there is so much growth in the company, but they do get rewarded well with vacation time. I also think it's very interesting and challenging work, so I think most employees are pretty engaged with what they're doing. If you do work here, be prepared to work with some ridiculously smart people!

    Cons

Illumina has grown so fast that they do have a lot of growing pains. There are a lot of gaps within the company that can make it hard to find what you need. Also, everything moves so fast that it can be difficult to a) focus on one thing and b) perfect certain things before they go out the door. I think these things will start to get corrected with time as the company ages, and overall, I think a good company to work for.
