Great benefits, beautiful campus. Bright future in genomics domestic and internationally. Bright minds and friendly colleagues.

    Cons

Big companies with tons of red tape and not a lot of chances for advancements. Moving laterally inside the company is difficult.
Lots of cliques inside departments, management of different departments butting heads all the time.

Stop hiring incompetent managers. Listen to the lower level employees wanting to make illumina successful.

I worked at Illumina (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    The company mission and campus

    Cons

The best days for Illumina are past. The company is struggling to make the move into clinical markets and lacks the expertise compared with more established companies, starting at the top with the new CEO and senior management. Most of the best people that made Illumina successful have retired or left for better opportunities. The company is trending to the mean in every respect.

I have been working at Illumina full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Mission, hands down. Great campus in San Diego, smart people to work with each day, and plenty of challenges to tackle.

    Cons

Management is always in meetings and making decisions prior to getting input and participation from the front line employees who deliver day in and day out. Communication can certainly be approved upon, and prioritizing initiatives and projects better, verses continuing to add more and more work without reprioritizing and eliminating low impact work.

    Advice to Management

With newly promoted CEO and President, recommend he be more visible and approachable. This was one of many strengths Jay Flatley brought to the table, and it helped gain so much loyalty from the employees. Hire a strong HR leader that truly gets the People Business. Hold management accountable to retaining top talent and creating a culture where their employees are included, and feel pride and ownership to the work they produce.
