I have been working at Illumina full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The people here are definitely the best part of the company. We're working on new, interesting, and impactful technologies. Campus is beautiful, city is beautiful.

    Cons

Incredibly fast paced. If you can't keep up, you're likely to struggle.
Some workplace politics can get tiresome.
Work-life balance is much better than it has been in the past, but is a continuing struggle.

I have been working at Illumina full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Amazing resources, opportunity for job growth, and majority of employees are extremely hard working and intelligent.

    Excellent location.

Best job I have every had. Universally respected company. Somewhat overrated but to the advantage of employees.

    Cons

In general: too many meetings and "bosses" (especially for RA's). Low salary in very expensive area. Requires commuting in traffic.

First year impression: Empirically-driven, brute force approach to product development. Much more reactive than proactive. Lots of resistance to non-functional testing and fundamental understanding.

In certain teams (small fraction so far, but direct experience): decisions regularly made without data and justified with circular logic or opinion stated as fact. Interdisciplinary technology makes it difficult for management to assess talent of new hires/promotions in areas outside personal expertise - compounded by associating company success with personal talent/intelligence. Interdisciplinary technology also forces management to lead in areas outside there expertise, leaving management very vulnerable to bias - without understanding, decision-making is decided by who is speaking and how they are speaking rather than what they are saying.

Still to be seen: A fair, merit-based bonus

    Advice to Management

Raise standards for teamwork and ethical behavior.

I have been working at Illumina full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

I love working in Illuminas highly innovative and collaborative environment. As a scientist, I've worked on very challenging problems to develop important new technology to enable our customers. I've also learned a lot about product development and worked cross functionally with other teams. Everyone works hard and is very dedicated to the company's mission and doing the best they can every day.

    Cons

It is a fast paced company and can be stressful at times. But the management is very supportive and i usually get the resources I need to do my job.

I worked at Illumina full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

I think the products of this company are cutting edge, meaningful and life changing. Their mission is great and noble.

    Cons

The company doesn't value their employees, has one of the worse severance packages (almost nothing) when laying off employees. Their HR had trouble delivering even the little that was promised. Also no maternity leave benefits except what is given to the mother by the state of California.

    Advice to Management

Treat people better. Don't be too stingy with the severance package, especially when the company is doing great.

I worked at Illumina as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

The bioinformatics department at Illumina was a helpful, and fast moving environment. Working hours were flexible. Several info-sessions were available on various technical fields. At the beginning of the internship, I was asked to whether have a more research or software development oriented project -- I appreciated that they wanted to shape the internship program according to my interests. No one was too busy to have a discussion on certain methods, or brainstorm on ideas.

Also, very helpful self-improving iAspire internship program overall.

    Cons

No cons observed during the internship duration.

I worked at Illumina full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Upper management listen to complaints and act
    Good benefits and employee services
Almost all employees have 9-5 schedule

    Cons

    More than average internal politics
Upward mobility limited so no incentive to work harder
Big and slightly disorganized, particularly due to absorbing recent acquisitions

I have been working at Illumina full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Very supportive and friendly environment. Monthly company meetings to help the employees better understand their role in Illumina's vision of making personalized medicine a routine in the clinics. The managers trust the employees in doing their jobs instead of micromanaging, this helps the employees to give their best. The team is really nice and everyone is always willing to help each other. My manager is also very nice. The HR team is amazing is arranging the interviews and communicating important decisions. Always willing to help.
Illumina hires the best candidates. The interview process is very rigorous. I applied on the companies website. Few days later I got a phone interview scheduled directly with the hiring manager. A day later I was scheduled for a phone interview with the HR following which they decided me to call onsite.
Onsite: it was half a day interview including presentation, a written exercise and one-on-one interview with each member of the team.
I will definitely recommend Illumina to candidates who are willing to challenge themselves with a fast pace and a very satisfying job.

    Cons

    Can't think of any cons.
