    Pros

    - Fast-paced environment, never a dull day - Amazing network of engaged employees who are passionate about the mission of the company - Involved leadership team who cares about the wellbeing of employees - Lot of fun activities for employees

    Cons

    - Can be too fast paced for some - Going through growing pains of "start-up" mentality to medium size corporation - Work life balance is tougher on some teams than others

    Science in action

    Pros

As a scientist in medical and clinical applications, this has been a great place to work. The research is cutting edge (application of sequencing technologies to solve disease), my peers are smart and engaged, everyone has been supportive. It's nice to have resources after coming from academia, independence to try different directions and ultimately produce data and (eventually) products that will change people's lives. This is a place for go-getters. In my area of bioinformatics, it helps a lot to have a variety of experience (pipelines, big data analysis, programming skills and biology) because we work quickly and at scale.

    Cons

Fast paced and occasionally chaotic, this place is like several start ups in the same building. Things break and you can either work with it, work around it or solve it. I can see it easy to get lost if you don't have a strong direction to pursue (either self-generated or by your team). It's also a training ground. A lot of folks come through, learn great skills and experience and eventually leave. That's not a bad thing, the value of a skilled alum from Illumina has made other companies better.

    The company values their interns

    Pros

I had a great learning experience at the organization. Their internship program is valued across the company and respected outside. All the employees, even the senior leadership of the company remain personally involved in the internship program and are eager to learn from their interns. Great culture. I definitely recommend this company

    Cons

No cons as such. But, if you do not want to work at a fast-paced organization, then Illumina is not a place for you.

Innovative and Fast-Paced Company; Passionate and Knowledgeable Employees

    Business Outlook

    Pros

Employees are passionate about our tech, incredibly knowledgeable, and hard working to keep up with the fast pace of the company. Also, the company shutdown week in July is a great benefit!

    Cons

Sometimes the fast pace of work can be be overwhelming. You must know how to set your work/life balance boundaries.

Fast paced collaborative and rewarding environment

Aug 6, 2021 - Senior Manager in Madison, WI

    Business Outlook

    Pros

Great technology, market leader impacting human health with its products, employee-friendly policies, motivated co-workers, great culture, very competitive compensation

    Cons

None really. Be prepared to work in a fast paced environment and embrace change, but that's part of being at a very successful biotech company.

Good challenging work, fast-paced, innovative but poor Management

Jun 14, 2021 - Anonymous Employee in San Diego, CA
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

Innovative and fast-paced (can be a negative too at times as it can be stressful); Learning from colleagues; Career development

    Cons

Cut-throat in certain departments - your position may be cut short due to bad Management and illegal workforce practices, without warnings or any written documentation; Some executives having inappropriate sexual relations with employees and favoring them yet rest of Management turn a blind eye; Robbing Peter to pay Paul culture - in order to award an employee, funds need to be taken from other employees and it leads to a competitive culture where most employees are brown-nosing Management for their upcoming bonus/stock payout and trying to out-do their peers.
