Reviews about "work life balance"

Pros
Illumina promotes work life balance, which has been helpful when feeling burnt out. Lots to learn which helps with career growth, but that's also dependent on which team you're in.
Cons
Some politics you have to deal with.
- Current Employee, more than 5 years★★★★★
Pros
Benefits are very good and mgmt in the commercial org always looking for ways to improve the employee experience and support employees. leadership is personable and accessible. You are encouraged to take initiative and challenge ideas. ILMN takes diversity and inclusion seriously and have improved hiring and recruiting practices. (quote from a direct report, "my old company would have never addressed diversity and inclusion as head on, I was shocked and impressed"
Cons
- continued struggles with CRM and processes, may need to start from scratch with some to maximize success - still a bit of a delta internal vs. field in terms of advancement cadence - will be increasingly difficult to balance the great culture, employee focus and work/life balance with increasing revenue, expense and compliance expectations of a top tier med device manufacturer -

Pros
- The campus is beautiful - Great teammates, great managers who care about their teams - Lots of smart people - It seems easy to move up in this company provided you show potential and demonstrate your worth
Cons
- Employees work too much - poor work-life balance - Illumina seriously underpays its technical employees, especially in Software Engineering. If you look at any salary website such as Glassdoor or levels.fyi, you will immediately see that Illumina pays often about 50% of what other companies are offering in the same geographic location. It is difficult to negotiate a better compensation package to match the market. The stock grants are much smaller than you can get anywhere else - seriously, my other offers gave 15-20x the amount of stock I received in my Illumina offer. I'm sure that the below-market compensation is the reason why during company meetings employees always point out how large numbers of people are leaving the company and joining competitors for better compensation. Illumina offers bottom-of-the-barrel compensation yet expects to recruit and retain top-level talent.

Pros
Health care package Great FTO policy (if your management encourages you to take your minimum vacation of 4 weeks) Very smart coworkers Fun collaborative atmosphere
Cons
If your management doesn't encourage you to take minimum of 4 weeks off a year then you are loosing out b/c pre-FTO everyone got paid out if you didn't take your 4weeks annual vacation (that was 4 weeks on top of holidays, and one week each July and Winter company holidays) Lots of fire fighting vs fire prevention still happening Unclear Roles& Responsibilities for lots of job positions People get burnt out from working too hard (need to prioritize your own work life balance - all the tools are there for you to do so though)

Pros
Great benefits- inexpensive healthcare, 401k matching, ESPP, yearly equity grant, health and wellness stipend, onsite gym, great work life balance, great company culture, intramural leagues, open minded environment Chance to work on incredible products that actually help people in a market that's only set to grow
Cons
Can still feel like a start up sometimes Constant "reorganizing" which can disrupt workflows and disband established teams

Pros
- Fast-paced environment, never a dull day - Amazing network of engaged employees who are passionate about the mission of the company - Involved leadership team who cares about the wellbeing of employees - Lot of fun activities for employees
Cons
- Can be too fast paced for some - Going through growing pains of "start-up" mentality to medium size corporation - Work life balance is tougher on some teams than others
- Current Employee, more than 5 years★★★★★
Pros
While working at Illumina, my managers have been incredibly supportive of my growth and work/life balance. I am encouraged to work on both strategic projects as well as passion projects. Benefits are top, parental leave benefits provide full compensation during (federal and state) leave. In a post-covid environment, work arrangements have been modified as needed which I appreciate.
Cons
High paced work environment which can be hard to maintain.
- Current Employee, more than 5 years★★★★★
Pros
Perseverance. Ability to achieve the impossible!
Cons
No work life balance . Bad organization structure within GQO

Limited career opportunities. Need to appreciate and retain talent

Good benefits. FTO, 401k, health, espp, dental, vision.
Cons
No work life balance. Unreasonable expectation with not enough budget or resources. Lots of talk about DEI but no real plan to grow and retain internal leaders.

Pros
Work life balance is very important to the company as is employee happiness. Frequent "temperature checks" to measure employee sentiment and inform policy.
Cons
Flexible time off sounds nice on paper, but in practice it can be tough to remember to take vacations. Part of me would rather accrue hours that can be taken or paid out. That being said, never had an issue getting time off when requested.
