    I worked at Imageworks

    Pros

Salary and overall benefits are the best I've had in the VFX industry. Career growth can be slow since there is a lot of good competition inside, but steady as long as you make the effort. Internal training which allows you to train in any discipline of VFX is excellent. Many different projects and being able to work in both Animated Films and Live Action is something that sets it apart from the rest.

    Cons

Career growth can be slow due to the sheer number of employees. Management sometimes has no idea of what's going on around them and can be poor at communicating with the artists. Work can be become routine during a project.

    Advice to Management

Be more open and communicate with your artists. Do not leave them in the dark about their future during project ramp downs. Be honest and clear - specially on bad news.

I worked at Imageworks full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Imageworks has had a varied film slate over the years giving animators lots of opportunities to explore different styles. Overall, your teammates are solid.

    Cons

A management change in 2008 changed everything. Jobs outsourced, schedules compressed and the production teams put a ton of pressure on artists throughout production. The studio went from a career studio to a one and done facility. Most of the supervisors and managers that made Imageworks a destination studio were pushed out.

    Advice to Management

I'd recommend management to cherish the talent of their teams, but...they won't be doing that any time soon.

I worked at Imageworks full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    - great pipeline to work with - site license for houdini and katana - love how you can do dailies from your desktop and continue working - really good at doing animated movies

    Cons

    - inept at feature film vfx - senior management is located in LA

    Advice to Management

    - doing fine, as indicated by the success of Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse - keep making quality animated features - proceed with caution if you want to continue into vfx

    I worked at Imageworks full-time

    Pros

Salary and benefits are great. A lot of cool animated features and some vfx work. Some good people/talents. Reasonable overtimes. Occassional training classes from other departments and interests (mostly lunch time) Free movies

    Cons

The environment feels like elementary school and less professional. Any experienced individual would be swallowing pride each day just to follow the "way". Your true performance is kept on a tight leash and shrouded to upper management. Tasks are distributed like circus crazy. That leads to losing track from mixed artists involved, wasting massive time and effort, and Frustration. quality is behind quantity. The goal is, do everything in Maya. Factory. Obvious Politics/circle

I worked at Imageworks full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

good pay and benefits, nice location, some great supervisors and a mix of live action and animated features.

    Cons

slowly moving away from the good managers who look after crew. some supervisors are not the best but thats the same everywhere.

    Advice to Management

figure out if we are an animated feature house or doing a mix of live action also. some new management are shifting the feel of the studio away from the family friendly place we loved

    Pros

Shine your resume. Working as an animator at Imageworks gives you a chance to work on both VFX and cartoon without jumping job. A lot of talented animators formerly worked such as at Pixar, DreamWorks, Disney are next to your desk so you can learn and get to know each other. Nice benefits with decent pay. Studios pay 100% of MSP and extended medical for you and your entire family and now even they have some RRSP matching. Nice facility which recently moved into the heart of downtown Vancouver. You can get at some discounts from nearby restaurants and stores.

    Cons

Very corporation environment. In the management's view, you are going go be an animator #239830 whatever. They treat you just as a toolset. Don't come here if you want to be treated as a real artist or animator. And good luck if you are in a production with bad habit or low budget. You might be asked to work mandatory OT up to 60s or even 70s per week. Majority of animators get paid 1.5x after 10h per day which is not cool. Also you need to compete with a bunch of douchbags who are working in ghost hours (non reported/approved voluntary OT) Sometimes you might be surprised and impressed they work for free until midnight or even 2 in the morning and recently it becomes a kind of Sony culture. Surely managements know that but they just let them keep doing. Studio assigned some seniors as leads because their animation skill was awesome. But the problem is, they don't know how to 'lead/manage' their team. Brace yourself for being bullied, stabbed sometimes. And don't hope you will survive in slow time only because your animation skill and review are good. They might kick you out simply there is no available spot for the next show at the moment, which might be changing a week later, on the very day or after your leave. And, their rigs suck.

    Advice to Management

Please please let people know what next as fast as you can so that they can plan accordingly. Spend money in RnD. Entire pipeline is collapsing and should be immediately overhauled.

I have been working at Imageworks full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

They're the only shop in town that provides an environment where animators can have a chance at both cartoon animation and vfx. It's fun to shift gears and switch up the specific disciplines that each kind of animation demands from an artist.

    Cons

The pipeline is becoming archaic and though the anim tools are still some of the industries best, they are quickly becoming outdated and it all needs to be revamped in order to facilitate future efficiency developments.

    Advice to Management

Blanket OT hurts the morale of the individual departments as well as exhausting and burning out the individual artists.

I worked at Imageworks full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Pay and benefits are better than average. You can work on animated films and/or VFX projects since Imageworks does both. Pipeline tools are user-friendly and easy to learn. Vancouver is a wonderful city.

    Cons

They hire indiscriminately these days, for the sake of staffing up the Vancouver office (which may be a good thing if your skills aren't great!), and they make a lot of promises they know they can't keep. At best, if they want to keep you on, you'll be kept on unpaid hiatus between projects. It's quite likely you'll have to find other work in town at some point though. Quality standards have dropped a lot in the past several years. You will work with (or for) people who don't know what they're doing. Leads often burn out quickly because of this.

  10. "Still a great place to work despite challenging business environment"

    StarStarStarStarStar

I have been working at Imageworks

    Pros

A collection of great inspired people, excellent infrastructure and pipeline. Opportunities to work on different types of projects ( both Vfx and animation).

    Cons

An ever changing and challenging business environment has required changes to the business model that make it more difficult to maintain consistent crews.
