Loosen management controls and focus on actively motivating employees. Eliminate age bias.

I worked at Imperial Oil full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great salary and benefits, good employee development and succession planning. Great mentors and continuous learning opportunities, fantastic people and good atmosphere

    Cons

Unless you live in Calgary or are willing to relocate there, choices and jobs are very limited. Even if you are fantastic at your job, unless you move you will eventually lose your job

    Advice to Management

Ensure the managers you have are good at talking to people. Save the super-smart and socially awkward people for the individual roles as they tend to demotivate the staff.

I worked at Imperial Oil full-time

    Pros

Pay and benefits were great, including vacation and internal job opportunities. If you work hard and are ambitious you can go pretty far.

    Cons

Unprofessional management overall and unhealthy workplace culture. I imagine they will continue to have difficulty retaining new hires, especially as new industries emerge in Alberta that actually invest in making a healthy culture for employees. IOL in general does little beyond providing a decent salary and that isn't enough to keep people for the long term when the culture just isn't there. HR was also not helpful when concerns were raised.

    Advice to Management

Treat employees with respect and lead by example. While my experience with management was fine, and I had some good managers, I also witnessed instances of disrespect and unsafe attitudes and behaviours modeled by "leaders" that were bad enough to make me leave the company.

Great company to work for all around. The other employees were knowledgeable and professional, and they offer a very competitive salary and benefits package.

    Pros

Industry expertise, solid work processes, safety first. Employee focused career development plans. Job security through rough markets, and excellent benefits and retirement package.

    Cons

Long hours, high stress, minimal supervision. Require workers to be self motivated to be successful. Will be difficult for individuals who have a tough time competing against peers.

    Advice to Management

Review extraneous "make work" assignments and remove to simplify job roles.
