I worked at Imperial Tobacco Canada full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

    - Company Vehicle - Salary (comparable to other FMCG companies - despite cut backs) - Great colleagues (if you are put on a high performing team)

    Cons

Work life balance is non existent at this organization even though they preach it to their employees. Senior management waste time with multiple meetings, and the sales force is asked to exceed expectations on daily basis while there is a strong disconnect between the sales force and senior management. When senior management does come out - managers put additional pressure on their sales team to make sure everything is perfect even though the competition is catching up and no longer acting like industry leaders. Competition is catching up and the senior managers can feel the pressure which in turn results in more expectations for bottom level employees.

    Advice to Management

Trust your sales force, they are the backbone of your organization but are told to sell sell sell so that senior management can achieve bonuses that are not shared to the ground employees.

    No opinion of CEO

I have been working at Imperial Tobacco Canada full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Car and unlimited personal mileage. Good for a starter but not for long. Join them, get the exposure and then leave for a better company / industry.

    Cons

TMARs are doers. Everything they should do come from the top. No freedom of expression or decision making. No chance of career growth for at least 15 years in the same job or same level in the company. Very adverse industry situation for an employee who's aiming to climb up the career ladder within a short period of time. Job cuts are on the way after plain packaging hits the trade..

    Advice to Management

You are very tactful in getting the best talent. But the guys who give the lifeline to the company who are TMARs are least cared of in this organisation, hence the very high TMAR turnover. Change your culture and include them in the business rather than treating them as a set of doers for the company who shouldn't ever be exposed to the company.

I worked at Imperial Tobacco Canada full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Decent salary and bonuses (although I have heard that these have been eliminated), work vehicle, gas card. Opportunity to learn in a tough environment, and opportunity to see how the marketing of a tobacco business is executed.

    Cons

Management has zero understanding of execution by account representatives. The company has been losing market share year after year and has moved to become very reactive. Field staff are micromanaged to an unbearable level. Every second of your work day is controlled and monitored by management. Sales process has become automated over the years, and the staff has been cut accordingly with no job security what-so-ever. Little opportunity for advancement.

    Advice to Management

Recognize the strengths of your staff at field level and offer a plan for advancement. A little autonomy for staff would help with morale vs being micro-managed all day/every day.

    Pros

Very robust business, you get the benefit of working with a multinational corporation, very dynamic and fast pace environment, really challenging.

    Cons

Not too many opportunities to grow within the company, specially if you are a sales rep. You could be stuck in the same position for years.

    Advice to Management

Make sure the career development program is implemented and followed up, not only by the line management, but also at the executive level so you can identify high value people who want to grow within the organization,

I have been working at Imperial Tobacco Canada full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

A good culture , good managers, good pay, relatively stress-free A definite plus is free car, gas, insurance and upkeep

    Cons

Not a lot of room for advancement or growth. Being part of a ridiculously large international organization , there should be way more opportunity for employees to move around and be relocated. Company is too focused in the now instead of the future and is failing to set themselves up for long term growth

    Advice to Management

    Less micro-managing
