  1. "Toxic Work Environment - won't change for a while due to declining industry"

I have been working at Imperial Tobacco Canada full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

    - Nice people - Convenient location - Free parking - Coffee barista - High salaries and good benefits - On-site Gym - Option to work from home when necessary - Free fruits - On-site daycare and clinic

    Cons

    - Nepotism; every other person is related to each other. - Upper Management lacks focus and there is no leadership. They run around like headless chickens puffing their chests and making horrible business decisions. - Toxic "highschool" work environment; lots of finger pointing, lack of ownership, lazy employees; all these make the good employees unmotivated and the company stagnates. - Lots of dishonesty and inefficiencies within the company. - Lack of communication and transparency within the teams and overall company as a whole. - Lots of "politics" involved when decision making or even the sharing of information. - Two-faced upper management that will smile to your face but say the worst things behind your back. Lots of manipulation from Upper Management for them to either get information out of you or setting people up to fail and pushing them out of the business or teams. - Very young team lacking experience but yet making the final calls without understanding the impacts. - Lack of career growth; you're stuck in your role for a few years doing the same thing, and when opportunities do show up there's a lot of politics involved so you may not get the promotion or move that you want. - Lots of smoke fog. Hockey tickets, free coffee, free lunches - they're hiding the real issues and pretending to be a "hip" and "forward" company "disrupting" and "leading" the business. - Lots of good people leaving on sick leave due to burnouts. High pressure environment but not the good kind of stimulating pressure.

    Advice to Management

    - Acknowledge the good work that your employees are doing; treat them like human beings, they're the ones working to make sure you get your bonus. Don't expect them to live and breathe BAT. - Give constant feedback instead of only during the annual performance reviews. - Stop with the "us" versus "them" mindset. This splits up the common goal of the company. - Communication. There is a lack of motivation within the company due to: 1) employees not understanding what they are working for; and 2) lack of sharing of information within the teams. Too much of hearing things through "word of mouth". If things are going bad don't pretend otherwise; your employees are doing the work so they know if you're lying or not. - Implement better career growth plans during the performance reviews. - Communicate internally when positions become available; stop communicating only after a role has been filled in, it doesn't give everyone the opportunity to apply to the role if they never knew it was available.

I worked at Imperial Tobacco Canada full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Company maintained vehicle is the only pros which I can think of

    Cons

1- No career progression. Same management team in Ontario for 20+ years 2- Management team is very bias towards certain individuals based on their race/background/language and those are the one being promoted/recognized 3- No work Life balance especially for individuals working in Toronto 4- Employer cutting perks/rumeneration almost every year 5- Limited/No development opportunities especially for Trade Markeing Account Representatives 6- High pressure Job, company doesn’t care about your career and just want targets to be delivered even if it’s at the cost of firing/letting go of high performing individuals 7- Restructuring takes place after every 2 years because of which many individuals who challenge status quo and are not “favourite” to district managers loose their job 8- Regional leadership team is only saving their jobs and are least interested in developing their team

    Advice to Management

Imperial Tobacco needs complete rehauling of culture. Employee needs recognition for their hard work which is completely missing in ITL. Employee needs career development which is completely missing in ITL, employee needs zero biasness policy as well as work life balance especially in Toronto. ITL has lost its magic of being the best employer in last 3 years and therefore most of the Trade Reps who worked with ITL for 10+ years are no more part of this organization!!

I worked at Imperial Tobacco Canada full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

    - Company Vehicle - Salary (comparable to other FMCG companies - despite cut backs) - Great colleagues (if you are put on a high performing team)

    Cons

Work life balance is non existent at this organization even though they preach it to their employees. Senior management waste time with multiple meetings, and the sales force is asked to exceed expectations on daily basis while there is a strong disconnect between the sales force and senior management. When senior management does come out - managers put additional pressure on their sales team to make sure everything is perfect even though the competition is catching up and no longer acting like industry leaders. Competition is catching up and the senior managers can feel the pressure which in turn results in more expectations for bottom level employees.

    Advice to Management

Trust your sales force, they are the backbone of your organization but are told to sell sell sell so that senior management can achieve bonuses that are not shared to the ground employees.
