I worked at Imperial Tobacco Canada full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

I have worked for Imperial Tobacco Canada for 12 years. I grew up in the organization and have seen it change many times over. The experience I gained was extremely valuable and unparalleled. If you are looking for a 9-5 “vanilla type”, organization Imperial Tobacco Canada is not the place for you. But, if you are motivated by challenging projects, innovative initiatives and constant growth, you will thrive here! The company’s best assets are the people and they are best is class. The organization invests in its people through training, on the job development and career progression. Though perception around the tobacco industry is still negative, it is an exciting time to be part of the journey: we are on the cusp of transforming the industry, as we launch less harmful products. The office environment is fresh and vibrant. We recently inaugurated the “LAB” with an onsite barista and cool spaces perfect for brainstorming and meeting up with colleagues. Onsite medical center and fitness center are great benefits as well. Expectations are high, but we work hard and play even harder!

    Cons

Sometimes because of the fast-pace environment, work-life balance can takes a hit.

    Advice to Management

Continue to foster a culture of diversity. Continue looking for innovative ways to operate in an ever changing industry. It might be a good idea to introduce even more flexible working arrangements to help foster even more diversity in the workforce.

I worked at Imperial Tobacco Canada full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Company maintained vehicle is the only pros which I can think of

    Cons

1- No career progression. Same management team in Ontario for 20+ years 2- Management team is very bias towards certain individuals based on their race/background/language and those are the one being promoted/recognized 3- No work Life balance especially for individuals working in Toronto 4- Employer cutting perks/rumeneration almost every year 5- Limited/No development opportunities especially for Trade Markeing Account Representatives 6- High pressure Job, company doesn’t care about your career and just want targets to be delivered even if it’s at the cost of firing/letting go of high performing individuals 7- Restructuring takes place after every 2 years because of which many individuals who challenge status quo and are not “favourite” to district managers loose their job 8- Regional leadership team is only saving their jobs and are least interested in developing their team

    Advice to Management

Imperial Tobacco needs complete rehauling of culture. Employee needs recognition for their hard work which is completely missing in ITL. Employee needs career development which is completely missing in ITL, employee needs zero biasness policy as well as work life balance especially in Toronto. ITL has lost its magic of being the best employer in last 3 years and therefore most of the Trade Reps who worked with ITL for 10+ years are no more part of this organization!!

I worked at Imperial Tobacco Canada full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

    - Company Vehicle - Salary (comparable to other FMCG companies - despite cut backs) - Great colleagues (if you are put on a high performing team)

    Cons

Work life balance is non existent at this organization even though they preach it to their employees. Senior management waste time with multiple meetings, and the sales force is asked to exceed expectations on daily basis while there is a strong disconnect between the sales force and senior management. When senior management does come out - managers put additional pressure on their sales team to make sure everything is perfect even though the competition is catching up and no longer acting like industry leaders. Competition is catching up and the senior managers can feel the pressure which in turn results in more expectations for bottom level employees.

    Advice to Management

Trust your sales force, they are the backbone of your organization but are told to sell sell sell so that senior management can achieve bonuses that are not shared to the ground employees.

    Pros

good pay. can use company car for personal (if you ever have any) purpose

    Cons

extremely bureaucratic. no work life balance. everything is judgmental, no performance appreciation. top level managers are extremely dependent on mid level managers and mid level managers can do what ever they want. It's all about perception, not performance.

I have been working at Imperial Tobacco Canada

    Pros

The quality of people is unique. Very talented people, high performer, high achievers and international mindset profiles operating in a very challenging industry and market. This organisation is not from everybody. It is for VERY resilient people who wants to develop and invest in their career to constantly grow and be stretched out of their confort zone. For career-driven people- not a 9@5 job!

    Cons

Work life balance.... to be successful it almost have to be work life integration.. which is not aligned with new generation values.

    Advice to Management

Less micro-management to give more space for latitude, creativity, empowerment.... this is what will drive engagement... 'A' players are not interested in only execution they want to develop & generate ideas, debate and have impact - there are strong talent in the house, it would be such a waste if people are starting to shut down and silent themselves.... this is when they will start to look elsewhere.
