I worked at Independent Bank (MI) full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

There are some great people who work for the company and I've always been impressed in my dealings with the new CEO. They also are willing to put a lot of money into ensuring their IT systems are top of the line.

    Cons

Although they are willing to spend on IT systems they are not willing to spend on more IT personnel which is the real need. Most companies their size have an IT staff of double what they have. IT also needs to implement maintenance schedules, testing systems, and change management to keep systems from going down so frequently.

    Advice to Management

Increase IT staff, bringing in thoughts and ideas on how things are run at other locations and listen to their suggestions and opinions. Stop spending so much on new technological solutions and try to make better use of the solutions you do have. Invest in training the talent you currently have.

I worked at Independent Bank (MI) full-time

    Pros

    The company has good values.

    Cons

Lazy management. Always short staffed. Too much turnover. Part time pay was considerably less that full time even though it was the same position. Promotions are given based off who is favorite and not who is qualified. Very negative and drama filled atmosphere.

    Advice to Management

Come out of your office and help the teller line

    Pros

Some management are nice, some employees were fun to work with

    Cons

Terrible pay. Executive management is terrible will want hourly emplouees to take a paycut and gige salary employees raises. Raises are yerrible. Many are 2 faced and will stab you in the back and are VERY fake

    Advice to Management

Grow up, make right decisions, quit being fake and get rid of management who do nothing while the rest in the branch work their butts off.

I worked at Independent Bank (MI) full-time

    Pros

There were many good people who worked here but the only reason things didn't fall apart on a daily, instead of weekly/monthly basis is because of constant heroics by the team.

    Cons

There seems to be no strategic planning in the IT area. It's all one fire drill after another.

    Advice to Management

Hire more people and start handling more IT related tasks internally. Start enforcing change control and maintenance windows.

I worked at Independent Bank (MI) full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Use to be a good place to work until they made a bunch of dumb decisions. Now they really have no Pro's.

    Cons

    Pay scale is low.
    Poor management
Cut hourly employees yet give Salary bonuses.
Create more stress on employees by downsizing half the staff of a branch and dont compensate them for more work.

    Advice to Management

Reevaluate your branches, Pay your employees better, Take care of your employees, Dont give bonuses to salary employees yet cut hourly employees, get a HR department that is actually worth something and not worthless.

    Pros

As a teller I made more then any other teller i knew at other banks. I made 3.00 more an hour then the 2nd highest paying bank. Lots of over-time.

    Cons

computers always down. Open 7 days a week from 7:30 am till 8:00 pm m-f saturday and sunday 8 am- 6 pm... Long days because you only get on brake and its your lunch. Your shifts are 9 hrs a day and with a hour lunch its 10 hours.

    Advice to Management

Take better care of your employees.

    Pros

Great customer service philosophy. Good bank products. Selling is not pushed on customers, and instead is focused on cross-selling technique. Friendly Michigan-local bank.

    Cons

Current salary freeze in company (as of fall 2010). Bank is not currently growing so not many opportunities for new hires or promotions.

    Advice to Management

Needs to work on rewarding good employees.

    Positive Outlook

    Pros

Room for advancement (I received 4 promotions in 5 years)
Great mentors (but you may have to seek them out)
Ability to make decisions and take initiative
    Access to senior management
Flexibility in hours and work locations

    Cons

Tendency of being a "good old boys" club - but I think that's more of a problem with the banking industry as a whole
Some employees are held on to for much too long
The compensation is not fair across departments, you have to fight for every dollar
