I worked at Indian River State College part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Very nice people to work with.

    Cons

You have to have a Master's degree for jobs that in the public sector might require only a Bachelor's degree. The pay isn't work the added cost of the education!

    Advice to Management

Consider what a person can do rather than just a person's education. A degree without the capability leaves you with a less than stellar team!

I have been working at Indian River State College full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The college is a great place to work. They are consistently trying to improve educational programs and services to help students. Great benefits such as spring and winter break off, off Fridays during the summer, and still get your two weeks vacation and 4 personal days as well.

    Cons

Staff members atleast in my area dont have a great why to be evaluated to be considered for promotions. Upper management doesn't communicate their vision to faculty and staff.

    Advice to Management

Looks for ways to help employees better themselves to be able to advance within the institution.

I worked at Indian River State College part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Important member of the community that plays a key role in the economic development of the Treasure Coast. IRSC acts as a pivotal axis point for education, professional training, and the business community. It is a well run campus with pristine and manicured grounds. The people are friendly and it is a pleasant work environment.

    Cons

At IRSC people are generally reluctant to dissent from the status quo. There is not a lot of room for independent progressive thinking and too many layers of hierarchy. Things move slowly and are relatively behind the times on many levels. It really doesn't feel like a college where things are hustling and bustling, but a hyper controlled "Stepford-esque" environment - nonetheless opportunities abound. The pay for adjuncts is abominable - not unique to IRSC but nationwide.

    Advice to Management

Ask your students and employees for input and listen to it without having the feeling of a repercussion. If the school tapped into the resources at their finger tips they could make a lot more progress more quickly. The top down management "father knows best" strategy is antediluvian.

I have been working at Indian River State College part-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Great place to work; like a family. Enjoyable work atmosphere, pleasant. Most employees spend a lifetime there and retire after 30 years.

    Cons

Hard to move from part-time to full-time unless you have connections. Some departments have controlling employees who are given full reign over the office.

I have been working at Indian River State College part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The work that ASC tutors do really makes a difference for the students. The schedule is also very flexible.

    Cons

Some of rules that you have to follow seem to little point and the same can be said for some of the programs we have to support.

    Advice to Management

The tutors should have more leeway to make the review session schedules because the tutors are more aware of the timelines and what the students want.
