I worked at Indiana State University full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

There are many great people employed at Indiana State University doing some excellent work. Many of the professional staffers are committed to seeing the university succeed.

    Cons

If you're a minority or a female, your chances of rising within this organization are bleak. Indiana State is a old white man's world.

    Advice to Management

Recognize that everyone doesn't have to look just like you in order to be a success.

I have been working at Indiana State University part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Flexible hours and working alone most of the time

    Cons

Upstairs can be a bit political at times, but overall management is doing their best

    Advice to Management

The sim lab is a lot more beneficial than I think we can give credit for it some times and that hurts the instructors here in the lab and the students as a whole.

I worked at Indiana State University full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

None that I can think of at this time. It was a bad experience. Students were not very motivated. I really did what I wanted to do

    Cons

Can not believe I worked there for almost 16 years. It was pretty bad most of the time. Everything was bad

I worked at Indiana State University part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Small, close-knit group of graduate students. Friendly campus.

Teaching assistantships or research assistantships can cover nearly all of the in-state tuition and also provide a stipend.

It's possible to gain teaching experience (and two semesters are even required for some PhD students).

Terre Haute is a small, quiet Midwestern town.

    Cons

Limited availability and selection of graduate courses.

Assistantship stipends are low compared to other universities. Roommates or a dual income is necessary to afford housing.

Health insurance is not offered to graduate students through the university.

The focus has shifted from student quality to student quantity in recent years.

There are limited activities off-campus for young adults in Terre Haute. The closest major city with restaurants, shopping, and an airport is Indianapolis, 1.5 hours away.

    Advice to Management

Add more extracurricular activities for graduate students (25–35 years old).

Offer health insurance options for graduate students.

Offer incentives or require annual reviews to ensure thesis/dissertation progress. Graduate students often stay beyond their targeted graduation date (> 2 years for Master's, > 5 years for PhD).
