I worked at Indianapolis Zoo part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Co-workers are very friendly and atmosphere is nice.

    Cons

My major con was the guests themselves. Having grown adults belittle you for something they didn't take their time to read or for something I can't control was annoying especially when you're just the messenger. The guests attitude tired me and made me not enjoy coming to work.

I worked at Indianapolis Zoo part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good pay for a high school student looking for first job. Employees were very nice and helpful.

    Cons

Had to work in booths all day or outside at the cheetah race. When its very hot out the Cheetah race was miserable to work at.

Working outdoors, considered part of the attractions family, and the professional relationships.

    Cons

Hours are not guaranteed, many policies are designed to micro manage.

    Advice to Management

    Listen more to your employees

I have been working at Indianapolis Zoo full-time

    Pros

Benefit plan is comparable to other institutions; very friendly atmosphere among employees

    Cons

Upper Management needs to start listening to it's employees and what they have to say, not shunning them or dismissing them. The Zoo is way behind in workplace trends and ideaology and compensation for employees.

I have been working at Indianapolis Zoo part-time

    Pros

Great people to work with, good hours in the summer, opportunities to advance in the company, work is easy to learn and fun, experience earned is very helpful to future positions, you get to see the animals every day!

    Cons

Less hours in the off season, can be hard work at times, some positions might seem repetitive and boring at times. If you're not willing to do a little housekeeping, this might not be the job for you. Must cover tattoos.

    Advice to Management

    Keep doing what you do.

I have been working at Indianapolis Zoo full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Excellent pto - given 40 hours quarterly. At 5 year mark gain an extra 40 hours making it 50 hours per quarter. Most staff are friendly and passionate about their jobs.

    Cons

New management of my department has proven to be remarkably bad - purely reactionary, no deductive reasoning skills, micro-managing, lacks the ability to delegate and trust.

    Advice to Management

Promote from within when you have more-than capable employees. Departments should work together instead of against each other.
