I have been working at Industrial Light & Magic full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

The people. The people at ILM are amazing from the supervisors and leads on down. They don't play the ego game and are happy to hear suggestions from anyone - the best ideas win. They treat the staff well and provide meals when O.T. is required - and the pay O.T. (a rarity these days). You get to work on the top films with some amazing directors and learn from teh best while doing it.

    Cons

When it's busy, it's really busy - 5 - 8 films going on at the same time. Sometimes it can get a bit hectic.

    Advice to Management

Keep doing what you're doing, continue to not get into the race to the bottom that some many of teh other VFX houses are engaged in. Filmmakers come to ILM for amazing quality and creative solutions - let the others fight for the scraps.

    Pros

good benefits for employees, used to be better pre disney

    Cons

Managers who truly have no idea what the persons they manage actually do. if you not buddy buddy with them you won't go anywhere and will have actively thrown hurdles in your way.

    Advice to Management

get managers to actually take interest in the day to day work.

I worked at Industrial Light & Magic full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Incredibly talented workforce, some of the best people in the industry. Nice location

    Cons

Upper management treats their employees like expendable cattle and are completely out of touch with the struggles and difficulties of the everyday worker. Little to no job security with petty politics. Individuals who get promoted tend to be those who enjoy belittling and dominating others. Current hierarchy structure fails to recognize structural issues as the only opinion that counts is upper management, they... completely discount employee grievances. This is not the ILM of the 80's and 90's that shone through innovation, this is now just another churn and burn studio that couldn't care less about their employees. I would highly recommend looking elsewhere for work, VFX is a dead end industry that is failing due to poor management and outsourcing.

    Advice to Management

Figure out a business model that doesn't depend on churning through talent like they're expendable garbage. Stop promoting those who thrive at the expense of others. Adopt a performance metric that isn't reliant on filtered feedback from self serving managers while ignoring the opinions and grievances of those who actually do the work. I passionately worked hours for free at this company only to be sidelined,... belittled and ultimately cast aside like refuse while a disgusting attempt was made to blacklist me from the VFX industry. This story has been repeated again and again. Sociopathic behavior is rewarded in middle management and a self serving out of touch upper management fails to recognize or accept any criticism of this from the general artist pool. Not sure how you will resolve such a toxic work environment, good luck to you.

I have been working at Industrial Light & Magic full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

-Great projects -Great innovation -Great talent -Challenging and diverse -Great accolades -Great support of personal ideas and research.

    Cons

-Strange company belief of pigeonholing (and in turn blunting generalists) -No upward movement/promotion (in first 10years - life) -Somewhat chained to an old (and often proprietary) pipeline.

    Advice to Management

They are on a great track, just stay the course!

I worked at Industrial Light & Magic for less than a year

    Pros

brilliant supes and other leads, Good OT policy and payout

    Cons

Getting stingy on pay increases. Also for foreigners they used to give you a choice of either corporate "free" housing accomodation for the duration of the project but after the budget blowout during transformers and everyone was extended, they now only offer to give you $10,000 relocation bonus - but be aware you only actually get $5700 cash in hand after they take all the tax out!

    Advice to Management

Offer better relocation deals or at least increase contracters rates

I have been working at Industrial Light & Magic

    Pros

    1. The people. The people at ILM are a wonderful group of artistic folks. It's very much a family. 2. The work. Just look at the credits list. The work speaks for itself. 3. Location. The Presidio is beautiful and LDAC is a first class facility.

    Cons

Sometimes it can take awhile to get recognition amongst a group of such talented folks. There's always a lot going on and things are constantly changing in order to stay on the cutting edge. This can make communication and protocol a challenge at times.

    Advice to Management

Focus on more ways to get direct feedback from artists.

I have been working at Industrial Light & Magic

    Pros

The people you work with are amazing, caring and helpful. The work is top-notch and usually something to be very proud about. The projects are the top tier, and the talent is untouchable and will rub-off on you with even just a little effort.

    Cons

The management appears to no idea nor do they appear to want to know what is going on in the trenches. Layoffs are heartless, unnecessary and endemic. You simply cannot work at ILM and expect to buy a house and raise a family. Salaries are too low, and you are all but guaranteed a layoff or "leave of absence".

    Advice to Management

Find your hearts again. They have been stolen by fear of losing your own job. Re-learn to do the right thing. BUT... thank you for putting yourselves between a rock and hard place. I can't be easy. Collect all the malcontents in a room and just listen to them. They are your only hope for innovation and survival.

I worked at Industrial Light & Magic full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Great artists, amazin talents. If you like franchises, really good projects Good for the CV Good salaries There is a will to change things, but things take very long to materialise Some good Disney benefits (free parks entries)

    Cons

old pipeline artist management is not great contract renewal usually done at the last minute London office doesn't get the same benefits as SF, ILM SF has a long VFX culture that didn't not reach London. uneven quality of supervisors, some are great some are bad They struggle to get new work, which resulted on a massive wave of lay off. More and more work is sent to 3rd party companies. No much space to grow,... limited career development.

    Advice to Management

There is work in modernising the pipeline but this is moving too slowly. ILM has to find a way to be more competitive. Maybe reduce the number of supervisor, streamline some departments, be more agile with the artists. Be more reactive, everything moves too slowly.
