Hi - it sounds like you had a bad experience when you reported a management issue. As you know, Intel wants our workplace to be a great place to work for everyone, and while you're no longer working... More

    Pros

I was surrounded by people far smarter than I could ever be. Most of the people I ran into were pretty decent folk, trying to do the best they could. In many ways, working at Intel is a bit like working at Ground Zero of what used to be the personal computing revolution. There is history there and one is awed. Intel was (still is) fanatical about tight processes. Read the book by Andy Grove (ex-CEO, now deceased) called "High Output Management".

    Cons

Big companies lose their way and Intel was no different. It's hard to keep culture when you add thousands upon thousands of employees. Class systems develop. Stupid stuff gets done just because someone with a bigger title -- not a better argument or more vetted data -- won the day. We're talking about billions of dollars of mis-allocated resources and its painfully obvious to everyone but no one dare say anything. Think of it as corporate political correctness. Andy would be appalled.

    Advice to Management

None. It's too late to really transform the culture and I certainly wouldn't know how to do it. But the problem is apparent to anyone who simply cares to notice (and many do).

    Pros

Worklife balance, Sabbatical and pay are all great. Work can be challenging depending on the group you are in.

    Cons

Non- Exempt employees have a difficult if not impossible time to transition into an Exempt role. While the roles for Exempts encourage growth the feeling is not the same on the Non- Exempt side.

    Advice to Management

Give more paths for growth to all levels on Non- Exempt employees

I worked at Intel Corporation as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Intel is very well known, and the company certainly has a lot of perks. Cafeteria is great, benefits are okay, but didn't impact me much as an intern.

    Cons

I found myself asked to program things I didn't think were very good ideas in the name of innovation. I mean, what do I know; but criticism wasn't accepted very well. Not that I hesitated to, just people seemed set in their ways.

The codebase I was assigned to was very bad, spaghetti code nightmare. I'm glad the internship was only a few months.

Pay scale is pretty fixed. That helps for equality, but not if you want a raise.

    Pros

    Cons

Politics(buzz word:networking) over talent, takes 2x time compared to a similar company for promotion, Middle-management is the bottleneck

    Advice to Management

performance measurement should be based on work done compared to the amount of networking one does.

I have been working at Intel Corporation full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Strong sense of purpose; good company values and best practices; Company top leadership trying to diversify the company

    Cons

My group was behind the curve in engineering practices; very long planning cycles; big desin up front. Career depended on whom you know and who likes you. Management did not live company values. Stack ranking.

    Advice to Management

Annual reviews are too slow and pure stack ranking has been abolished elsewhere. Actually care about people.
