I worked at Intelius as a contractor

    Pros

If you're just putting in time at a job to collect a paycheck, then this will be a good place for you. People don't arrive early, take off at 4:45, and by Friday at 4:30, the place is empty. Of course, you still need to perform, but no one there was busting themselves to go above-and-beyond the call of duty.

    Cons

First, only work here if you're not ethically challenged. The data they sell is pure crap, so the customer churn (and threats) is high. Then, the people who work there (including the executive team) are all B-level. The few ambitious and smart people I saw, they took off to other jobs. So, you're getting people who are just cranking through. This means the level of innovation is low, and slow. The pay is about 85% of the market rate, so of course, those with the smarts take off to better opportunities.

Also, for better or worse, this is a data-driven company. It's good to see they're using a basis of decision making, but at times, I saw them make sub-standard decisions to optimize the data they reported to the board.

    Advice to Management

Keep up with your competitors; improve the accuracy of your data; implement a customer satisfaction policy.

    Pros

Good teamwork among engineers and manager level employees. Good work-life balance and good benefits.

    Cons

Inept leadership team. It is a sinking ship in an industry where it could easily be successful if they just did a few things right. No customer focus, no innovation, no direction. Upper management (new CEO) does nothing to inspire good work from his team.

    Pros

Regular paycheck, good team of individual contributors
    Good benefits

    Cons

Lots of nepotism, with friends and family of executives filling roles that they aren't qualified for.
Big cult of personality around Naveen Jain (much of it supported by Naveen himself).
    Poor career/ascension management.

    Advice to Management

Hire qualified people, not friends and family

    Pros

Fast and start up feel with opportunities if you want to run hard at projects.

    Cons

Since the acquisition and shake out of the team, the remaining management team is a study in ineptness and back stabbing demoralization. No one I know would or should work here.

    Advice to Management

    Quit.

I have been working at Intelius full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good work life balance, flexible hours, competitive pay. Friendly employees who socialize often and actually enjoy each other's company.

    Cons

Poorly managed, company seems to be moving in reverse and losing market share. Extremely poor culture that has developed where no one does anything beyond the bare minimum. Technically stagnant. Lack of cooperation and decision making ability amongst managers results in much longer than reasonable product delivery times. Lack of advancement opportunities in large part due to the stagnation of the business.

    Advice to Management

Fire technically incompetent middle management. Be more proactive about promoting good engineers, and about giving them the decision making power to push product life cycles at a more rapid pace. Find new business verticals that appeal to a wider audience and position us for longer term success rather than clinging to the currently dying background check vertical.

    Pros

    Excellent operations and release staff
Some very good developers on board (You can learn quite a bit)
Opportunity to work on a product used by millions of people

    Cons

    Very political culture
Some positions at the company were obviously filled as a favor, not because of competency
Focus on making money, even to the detriment of customers
    Below market rate pay

I worked at Intelius full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Some of the smartest people I have worked with in my career. Everyone is a potential mentor and happy to help out and help you reach your goals. Lots of great places to eat. I enjoyed the teams I worked with and built great friendships.

    Cons

It's hard to make lateral moves within the company. If you are a person that is not sure about what career path you want to take, this is not the place that will allow you to explore other opportunities.

    Advice to Management

Be more open to employees exploring career choices.

    I worked at Intelius full-time

    Pros

Pros here include: Decent parking compensation program. Near Bellevue bus. Engineers on call get comped on cellular bill. Some smart folks work here who want to do good. Facilities and working areas are pretty new. Working on the 22nd or 16th floor offers good views of Bellevue.

    Cons

Baggage with a number of older projects, products and botched aquisitions. Lots of wild hair side projects to make a quick buck. Lack of concern for customer and delivering a quality product. Management will lie about a number of things to cover up issues with the company. Lack of willingness to admit failure to improve the business. Company also has a tendency to go low on compensation. Lately employee attrition has been high. Lack of respect for the CEO in the region. Intelius is not a well liked business in the region.

    Advice to Management

Focus on one product and remove distractions. Learn from your mistakes, and become more accountable to your employees. They know when you make mistakes, so addressing them and making a plan to succeed in the future is key. Get a CEO who's focused on the company's success. The current one is focused on a number of projects. Intelius/Inome seems to be a side project.

    Pros

    - Very low stress level, typical 9 - 5 office hours. Rarely need to work overtime.
    - Easy to survive, too many slackers around this company, some so-called engineers and dev managers don't even know the basics. Which means no matter you are a fresh grad or entry level engineer, you will find yourself better than a lot of people here.

    Cons

    - Salary and benefit are way below industry standard
    - No room to grow, never haven't anyone get prompted during my time. However, they prompted a bunch of people because most talented hard workers left in the past few months.
    - Expect to work with some noobs, this company still has some smart, hard working people, but you can count them with one hand. If you are unfortunate enough to work with one of the dev manager who only knows cowboy coding, good luck.
    - Work with very legacy, hard to maintain code, while not being allowed to change anything as they are your manager's babies.
    - Bad reputation, virtually no one knows Intelius and it has pretty bad reputation in Wall Street. IPO is simply a joke.

    Advice to Management

Keep the good guys and get rid of the "older, wiser" boys.
