What’s the best way to have a lack of compensation and incentive conversation in your department? I went above and beyond for years doing extra work, organizations etc and nothing has been reflected in pay. I thought my 5 year was going to finally show something but it did not. I’ve inquired about pay but it’s gotten nowhere.

One of the worst run companies imaginable

    Pros

pay a lot and some smart people

    Cons

What I originally thought to be an interesting business model turned into a sham. Management decisions are made by One Founder who has no business sense. Smart technically, but he has absolutely no business skills and is not involved in daily work and explodes if anyone offers advice or reality to his view of the world. Management team stays put in their offices; never roam the floors to get a feel for the business. As a result, half the people are just looking for another job and getting paid well to do it. Very poor management team. No accountability for anyone. Very embarrassing.

    Interesting environment

    Pros

they have very smart people who are individually very nice and interesting. The pay is more than competitive, work life balance not bad.

    Cons

collectively groups of people tend to overthink things. simple problems get complex very quickly. Collaboration is challenged due to nature of the business and attitudes (and territorial tendencies) of leaders. benefits aren't good.

A Fun Business, Growing Pains, Need more future view

    Sep 26, 2012 -

    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

Salary is higher than average. Business model is new. Leader in the niche. Very smart people around. Great opportunity in the market. Free snacks, drinks.

    Cons

Top managements are not very clear about the new business model in 5 years. Need a lot of try and fail cycle to figure out. Process is weak. But they are working to build it. Expanding quickly in recent two years. Not sure if the business can sustain in the near future. A lot of jobs are self-initiated. Do your best work.

    Pros

Extremely well capitalized You will be well compensated You'll work with very smart and talented people there

    Cons

Huge egos within management There was lots of talk with little action The company is inefficient - lots of money is wasted on (useless) pet projects Communication is a rare virtue

    Good people, Bad culture

    Aug 13, 2011 -  in Bellevue, WA

    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

Individual people can be really nice and smart. Personal interactions can be satisfying on a social level. Salary is generous.

    Cons

Despite the interesting people working there, the overall culture is not good. There is a pervasive culture of disrespect from the top down (the new President excepted). It is okay for many teams to do almost nothing, or work that has little or no value. There is a large amount of waste in the company which is tolerated, and at times encouraged. Although many people are good to interact with socially, there is no sense of teamwork or common goals overall.

Great place to work, if you have the right attitude.

    Oct 19, 2010 -  in Bellevue, WA
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

Expectations are high, but if you like a challenge, you'll get all you can handle. It is never, ever, boring. You work with extremely smart and driven people. Salary compensation is average or above average, but the potential for additional income is huge. You work on interesting, and in some cases world-changing, technologies. Potential, on all fronts, is staggering.

    Cons

Mostly senior and experienced people are hired to work here, so if you're looking for a typical 'career path' you won't find it. The business model is mostly in people's heads. Processes are not documented or well understood. Communication is an issue. Too many smart, driven leaders who don't really talk to each other, or their subordinates.

    Avoid at all costs

Sep 11, 2022 - Senior Management in Bellevue, WA

    Business Outlook

    Pros

A lot of really smart people have come and gone.

    Cons

CPO is a very broken person. She is despised by all and runs her own agenda. The primary Founder has no clue as he is all IQ and no EQ whatsoever. Many people have worked hard to only be taken out by her petty politics.

    Intellectual Ventures Response

Everyone is entitled to their opinion; however, your harsh and deeply personal statements leave me at a loss to constructively respond. All I can say is that I’m sorry you feel this way, about me, about Nathan, and about IV. Although I’m certain there are things I could do better, I work hard to show up for employees and foster an environment where everyone at IV can let their talents shine for the good of all. If you ever have concerns that you are not comfortable raising with your HR Partner, manager or leadership team, you can anonymously contact Lighthouse Services at 1-844-280-0005. Best, Nicole

A nice place to work - very smart people

    Nov 24, 2011 -
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

Very smart people trying to solve hard problems. If you're a process person this is the wrong place for you as the business changes very frequently, sometimes several times a year. You have to be good with working with people and dealing with ambiguity and changing priorities.

    Cons

Some parts have very immature processes.
