    Great hours (no manditory holidays or weekends), great pay (includes pension and benefits), great brotherhood (a network of people that will be there when needed), travel optional

    Apprenticeship required and somewhat difficult to get into.

    Generally steady employment. Living wages for inside wireman classification.

    Cons

    Possible layoffs, first to lose work in poor economy, sheltering of worthless employees, poor wages for some classifications, dues go toward unsavory politicians, insurance is expensive.

    Pros

    Learn new things, paid to start completely green. Good health benefits.

    Cons

    Long drives to site in your personal vehicle, no per diem. Low pay as an apprentice. No 401k match, no paid time off. It's construction so you'll be outside a lot, heat, cold, rain or snow. Schooling is not paid, and you spend 12+ hours a week completing the homework-plus missing a day of work to go to class, depending on the local.
