I worked at International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia full-time

    Pros

The organisation encourages personal development and provides paid study leave days, which is necessary as there is very little learning on the job, and skills learned here are seldom applicable outside the organisation.

    Cons

Some truly incompetent management. This runs unchecked as there is barely any accountability within the organisation. The structure is such that it is impossible to fire incompetent people. With the right schmoozing, some really terrible people have clawed their way to the top and get shuffled between different organisations in the international justice sector.

    Advice to Management

There are so few good, competent managers. If you're one of them, don't leave, try and change things.

I worked at International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

International, young staff, diverse people, great location, working together to bring justice to the people of the former Yugoslavia

    Cons

Old building, some bureaucracy, traffic in Den Haag is horrible, end of institution is in sight, many temporary contracts

    Pros

Definitely had some interesting work come across my desk and it was really interesting to be in such close proximity to the trials going on just upstairs. Looks great on a resume, obviously.

    Cons

Definitely did a lot of dry office work, but that's to be expected. No funding!

I worked at International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Very interesting opportunity to work as an intern on cases involving war crimes during the war in Yugoslavia. Opportunities to learn a lot about the conflict.

    Cons

Too many interns in the intern program, so there is not enough work to keep everyone busy. Means that sometimes you will have work that is repetitive and doesn't contribute much to the team.

    Advice to Management

You should ensure that lawyers interns are assigned to actually have work to give to their interns on their specific cases. If not, it should be easier to switch cases and find others who have more work.
