I worked at International Paper full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

*Great opportunities for advancement, not just at your own mill, but at other locations within the company. *IP does a great job training their engineers and management in problem solving techniques, leadership classes, technical training from experts, etc. *Pay is great. One of the highest paying employers in the locations I have been in. *I loves the transparency within the company. As a new engineer, I had several opportunities to interact with senior Vice Presidents and the CEO.

    Cons

*Work/life balance is not good. Expected to work long hours with no comp time. *New engineers are expected to work as a shift manager within their first few years. Many are not interested in this, but it's pretty much forced in order to advance.

    Advice to Management

Respect the fact that employees have a life outside of work. Continue to offer advancement opportunities.

I have been working at International Paper full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Well paid. Lots of relevant projects given and real industrial experience opportunities to grow. Colleagues have been very helpful in teaching me the process and getting me up to speed.

    Cons

Long hours, especially during the annual outage. Young engineers are encouraged to become a shift foreman which is not a natural fit for many of them.

    Advice to Management

Sometimes you have to spend money to keep equipment reliable. Don't let "needing to make budget" get in the way of letting the mill run reliably.

    No opinion of CEO

I have been working at International Paper full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Always room for overtime opportunities. Millwide and departmental training. Safety is the number #1 key for IP as a whole. Advancement opportunities are given to those who are focus, dedicated, and pursuing careers.

    Cons

Long hours based upon department not being fully staffed. Veterans afraid of change Tier pay differences Work/Life balance High turnover rate based upon pay differences

    Advice to Management

Focus on the tier pay differences for mills dealing with this issue. The high turnover rate is presenting upset conditions in departments. We understand the overall view of the company (maximize profits/value shareholders) but the workers deserve to be compensated in the manufacturing sector of the market.
