I have been working at Internet Brands full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

I truly believe IB knows how to hire great/smart people, a lot of people come here for great industry experience and then move on to bigger and better things within a couple of years. So in that sense, it's a stepping stone company for most, but one that gives you the experience that makes you an asset when you do move on.

I've found that for the most part, managers are very in-tune with their team members and there is a lot of opportunity for mentorship to entry levels. But of course, every division is very compartmentalized so I can only really speak for the one I've worked within.

    Cons

It is very clear who the company sees as valuable versus easily replaceable. In fact, it seems that the only people that IB considers valuable (outside of upper management) are those that work on the technology side, more specifically the product managers. While this makes sense being that it's a digital media company, it can be bad for the morale of the other 95% of the company. It seems that they are the best paid as well.

While that's bad and all, the worst thing about this company is their recruitment process. Recruiters ask inappropriate questions, make inappropriate statements and rudely nitpick what they believe will be used against you in the hiring manager's deciding process, and worst of all make false promises as to what compensation review processes are like.

    Advice to Management

Clean up the recruiting process a lot and provide them with a more structured training. Recruiting is a first impression of the company and you don't want to deter great candidates.

I worked at Internet Brands (More than a year)

    Pros

    - Well-diversified stable company, separate segments serve numerous markets
    - Variety of types of embedded development work depending on the segment, including some interesting innovation.
    - Highly collaborative environment, emphasizes face-to-face interaction and individual ownership/initiative
    - Your role is not dictated by your title, tenure…

    Cons

    - Due to company size, some types of technical and process improvements can be difficult or slow to make.
    - Less flexible than some companies regarding when working hours occur, work from home, etc.

    Advice to Management

Keep emphasizing the diversified business model -- it brings long term stability and makes an interesting place to work.

I have been working at Internet Brands full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Flexible hours
    Fun, energetic environment
    Young atmosphere
    Great coworkers
Ability to gain experience and the opportunity to try positions you hadn't naturally
Right by LAX, so you get to watch the planes take off

    Cons

    Lower than average compensation
    Things progress very slowly
Not much money put into advertising/marketing

    Advice to Management

Allow your employees to grow and succeed. So many people here are hard workers and are not being compensated for it as much as they would at any other company.

I worked at Internet Brands full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great learning environment, a lot of great talent and cool people, easy to approach upper management, great location, by the airport.

    Cons

Pretty much 0 benefits unless you are upper management. You will not be payed well, even if your manager leaves and you take on their responsibilities so that they don't need to hire anyone else, you will not get a pay raise or maybe if you're lucky a minimal bump. I know a ton of people who have taken on more responsibility as peers left, with no added compensation or even promotion in title.

    Advice to Management

You're goal is to save money, and get a good "deal" on your employees. If that's your mentality turnover rate will stay high and you will lose some gems that you could have kept if you cared a little more about your employees.

    Relaxed environment
Company events through out the Summer.
    Management is understanding

    Cons

    Not much room to grow
    No yearly raises
No parking pass for part timers. So be prepared to come in early for work to find parking or hike up the street.

    Pros

Just joined the company, but already a lot of autonomy. No micro-management. Interesting corporate structure. Nice environment. Cool people.

    Cons

Ramp up time is quick. Super quick.

    Advice to Management

A bit more early training would be helpful.

I worked at Internet Brands full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Some very smart technical people there, great place to learn and hone technical skills, flexible hours, most people were friendly, ability to learn different aspects of the business

    Cons

middle management miscommunication to upper management created differing "realities". mediocre salaries, no real performance incentives available, seemed to have a very high turnover rate

    Advice to Management

because a manager is technically brilliant qualifies them to be a good manager or leader.

I worked at Internet Brands full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

+ Strong learning / mentoring culture; we are all encouraged to experiment with new technology and provide guidance to interns and juniors.
+ Decisive QA Leadership. The dept. is run by QA people that understand our needs.
+ People are good. The hiring process is selective and there's a real emphasis on finding good people instead of hiring by resume keyword.
+ Work life balance is actually enforced. Flexibility for family issues is stellar and working too much will score you a concerned chat from your boss.

    Cons

    - Chaotic legacy technology stack. The core product is mostly ancient code many don't understand. Too many core features are untestable by tradition.
    - Awful office habitat: too few bathrooms, coffee is always gone, low quality chairs, and overall depressing cube-farm vibe.

    Advice to Management

I get it that being cheap is part of your secret sauce, but sometimes you have to spend money to make money. Try to have an open mind for those types of opportunities.
