I worked at Internet Brands as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

I'll structure this reviewed based on the Department of Labor's Six-Part Test:
1.) The internship must be for the benefit of the intern.
Yes, every chance to pitch, draft e-mails to media, and general pitching was great experience to add to one's portfolio.

2.) The intern must not displace regular employees and must work under close supervision of existing staff.
Worked extremely close with the PR manager and the CMO. Great experience to learn how to interact with high execs in a corporate environment.

3.) The employer gets no immediate advantage from the intern’s work—and may, on occasion, find its operations impeded by the internship.
Half-true, obviously the good work you do benefits the company and brand's reputation overall however, my supervisor was always happy to answer any questions I had!

4.) Both employer and intern understand that the intern is not entitled to wages for time spent in the internship.
Was paid hourly. I was really fortunate to not have to balance a second part-time job with school.

    Cons

5.)The internship must be similar to training that would be provided in an educational environment.
50/50 on this but overall you will get a great foundation for in-house experience. This is simply due to the nature of corporate environments.

6.)The intern is not necessarily entitled to a job once the internship ends.
Unfortunately not, but this is a great company to work for.

    Advice to Management

I think HR very well knows but high turnover is prevalent here. Most people use their time and experience at IB to transfer to either higher paying positions or a more glamorous company.

    Pros

Work location is good and colleagues are very friendly.

    Cons

    Can end the job anytime.

    Advice to Management

Do not expect a lot of experience from an entry level person. He/She came out with very little knowledge and seeks some guidance.

I worked at Internet Brands full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Not too many Pros. Maybe for an entry level position, it's a descent place to learn and get out in a year.

    Cons

    - Low Salaries (HR views salary negotiations as a negative; "how dare they have the audacity to ask for higher salary." If you are in sales, you literally will never get a raise.
    - Benefits package is atrocious. No 401k match, medical insurance is pretty bad.
    - HR department is the worst I've ever seen. Constant errors, haven't heard one personal internally say one positive thing about HR.
    - Most departments don't have a dedicated Marketing or PR person.
    - "The IB Way" is a thing around the company that employees say - typically refers to broken infrastructure, or any internal backwards procedure.
    - No free snacks. Literally vending machines, and they are fairly expensive. I would walk downstairs to a store and buy things there, instead of contributing to the bottom line of the company. There was a period of 2 months when our floor didn't even have filtered water.
    - Out of touch executives - have no idea what actually goes on in the marketplace. Some of the senior people have been with the company for 15+ years and are enthralled in the "IB Way."
    - No formal review process.
    - Random office politics (again, because most executives are lifers).
    - Very minimal upward mobility.
    - Most of the sites IB owns are highly outdated, with minimal investment into development.
    - Ad trafficking department is a revolving door; if you are in ad sales, your worst nightmare is dealing with incompetent ad trafficking personnel who literally don't know what they are doing.
    - 0 opportunities for personal/professional development; no courses, seminars, or really, a formal training program when on-boarded.
    - Recruiters pretty much have to embellish the opportunity and company culture. I would say recruiters are probably some of the best sales people within the company.

    Advice to Management

Fire SVP of HR: Company culture overhaul is in order, and it starts from the top!
    Install a formal review process.
Provide a career path for employees.
Figure out a way to develop employees, and not have a rotating door for most positions.

I worked at Internet Brands full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

+ Working atmosphere is fairly laid back. Casual clothing.
+ Many opportunities for free food.
+ There are company sponsored events.
+ They support the growth and learning for entry-level positions. Sometimes supplemental learning tools are given to people to help them learn new tools.
+ Progress Reviews are fairly consistent and they happen. Salary increases fairly common (approx once every three months).
+ Schedule is fairly flexible iff you live near the office.

    Cons

    - The team you are on determines much of the quality of your work environment. Though there is supposedly a lot of effort in determining what team you are placed on, if you dislike it, you will dislike it everyday until you make an effort to change.
    - The company has high turnover. While this is a result of a large amount of people working there and there are just simply a lot of people, it is also caused by low pay and rather meager benefits.
    - Feels like there is a disconnect between individual teams/projects and upper management at times. Lack of standardization/structure for many roles (business, developers) and standards that are only held in some teams but not others (QA).
    - Salary is low. Despite increases, you feel like you do not earn much and are moving very slowly to ideal wages.
    - Overall uninteresting/boring business products are the bulk of your projects.
    - Despite quarterly reviews, progression feels fixed at a slow pace.
    - High turnover. People leave all the time due to varying reasons but low salary is usually the root of it.
    - Is based in El Segundo, meaning if you do not live nearby, commute times are horrible.

    Pros

    Flexible hours
    Fun, energetic environment
    Young atmosphere
    Great coworkers
Ability to gain experience and the opportunity to try positions you hadn't naturally
Right by LAX, so you get to watch the planes take off

    Cons

    Lower than average compensation
    Things progress very slowly
Not much money put into advertising/marketing

    Advice to Management

Allow your employees to grow and succeed. So many people here are hard workers and are not being compensated for it as much as they would at any other company.

    Pros

    - Well-diversified stable company, separate segments serve numerous markets
    - Variety of types of embedded development work depending on the segment, including some interesting innovation.
    - Highly collaborative environment, emphasizes face-to-face interaction and individual ownership/initiative
    - Your role is not dictated by your title, tenure…

    Cons

    - Due to company size, some types of technical and process improvements can be difficult or slow to make.
    - Less flexible than some companies regarding when working hours occur, work from home, etc.

    Advice to Management

Keep emphasizing the diversified business model -- it brings long term stability and makes an interesting place to work.

    Pros

Great team, co-workers are easy going and nice to teach you. Good management from the manager to keep everyone on track.

    Cons

Very low pay, minimum holidays. Most people don't work here for long time, and they were complaining about the low payment.

    Advice to Management

    Care about employees!
