I have been working at Interstate Hotels & Resorts full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Already a large company but rapidly growing at the same time. A wonderful cultural with outstanding core values. Senior Leaders are mentors and value your input. There is work/life balance. Compensation and benefits are very good

    Cons

Not much. At times hotels may be sold and there is a chance of management change. Nothing new here to the industry though

    Advice to Management

Keep doing what you are doing and you will attract talent

    Pros

Great resources for anyone needing information on pretty much anything. Organized, detailed.

    Cons

This company does not believe in a work/ life balance, if your goal is to work constantly and dedicate your life to the business then this may be the place for you. They do try and pinch pennies wherever they can, this is most visible in raises, labor and incentives for the employees. Most of the corporate folk have been with the company for years so there is a "click" type atmosphere. The companies sole purpose... is to acquire more and more properties. Work and people are not valued. Managers, directors and operations professionals are seen as numbers, not given the opportunity to voice opinions.

    Advice to Management

Im a big believer in "you quit your boss not your company." With this being said I will not completely dismiss the organization. The property I worked for however had a work atmosphere or fear and passive aggressiveness. I believe a company should allow those that want to grow further progress and provide adequate compensation for all employees. If those at the top would become more involved and see the great... people that work in the properties and filter out these "older middle level" with those that actually care about people and not numbers, this may make a better work environment.

    Pros

    * Benefits * Hotel/travel discounts

    Cons

This list is going to be long, sorry, but just being honest. * work/life balance is a joke * short staffed ALWAYS (Ever since interstate took over in Janurary of this year we've been short staffed) * management changes are a joke (making most of their properties into duel GM roles... meaning that they don't want to pay for 2, which makes it impossible to communicate with Upper management) * task force is a... joke * micro management with little to no direction * unreliable management * pay is a joke 11 an hour to do 3 to 4 positions alone due to short staffing * asking for time off is impossible * no vacation time for well over a year if you can even take it, again due to short staffing * the company is very much a paper-work type of company which makes management very hands off and they hardly help staff if needed * working 10 days or more in a row before your next day off * filling in when people call out because management is too "busy" to step up, but they expect hourly staff to do so though * can't call out most of the time even in emergencies because no one can cover and management won't * schedules come out the night before the new week starts so you can't plan anything * they make you feel unappreciated * they don't motivate you * little to no chance of being promoted from within despite showing you are ready and have the experience * they expect you to be cross trained in multiple departments with no incentive * just a trash company at the end of the day that will work you until you've got not heart and soul left for the job itself

    Advice to Management

Look at my cons list and maybe try to do something about it. I really despise this company. I use to really love my job; now I hate it and hate waking up every day for my shifts.

    Pros

You get discounts at various hotels.

    Cons

No work life balance. If you work in the payroll department, forget about holiday's off. They want you to work at managerial/supervisory levels but pay below market rates. No matter how well you work, they always find something to keep you from getting the very little raises and bonus offered at the end of the year. Horrible communication. They have 4 VP's, 2 managers, 2 supervisors, 2 leads and only 15... coordinators. They never communicate with each other, so good luck finding clearity and proper direction. The benefits are horrible and their is really no incentive to stay. The turn over rate is over 100% for a reason.

    Advice to Management

If you are going to over work your employees and not provide a balanced work/life, pay market rates.

I have been working at Interstate Hotels & Resorts full-time for less than a year

    Pros

If you want to be in hospitality and manage a hotel one day there is usually room for growth. If you're lucky and don't have terrible management they will help you with advancement if you speak up about your intentions. But you'll have to start at the bottom of the food chain first and that is the worst job in "management" if you have lazy managers above you that pays POORLY. If you care to advance you will have to... let management take advantage of you, work crazy hours, and expect nothing in return except your terrible pay and hope for a promotion soon. Once you climb up the ladder, the pay gets a bit better.

    Cons

Terribly low pay, a 3% salary increase yearly, IF you are reviewed well (really? 3%?). Corporate does not care if you have valid complaints, if you're unhappy you just have to quit. Good employees are worked so hard they burn out because they're picking up the slack for the crappy manager and other lazy staff. When a higher up actually comes to see what's happening they only really speak to the manager of the hotel... who is the root of the problem and they only pretend to care about what the staff have to say. High turn over rate. If you don't speak up you'll be thrown in every position working different hours all the time and have no work/life balance to speak of but they'll spin it as you being a "team player". The benefits are also atrocious, better hope you don't get sick or need to visit any type of doctor.

    Advice to Management

Take initiative. Actually listen to your employees. Higher ups: talk to the associates AND LISTEN to them instead of management and maybe you'll figure out what the real problems are. Be present. Don't take your bad day out on your underlings, it's unprofessional and rude. Change insurance.

    Pros

Large company , corporate leaders seem to truly care about associate success and are engaged.

    Cons

Absolutely no work life balance, associates are numbers , managers and hourly are expendable based on preference not performance. Little to no guidance or training.

    Advice to Management

Corporate should be more hands on with their properties. While everyone from corporate seemed very genuine and caring the some of the GM’s /Execs they bring on board are not. However they put on a great show during corporate visits. Screen your GM’s / Exec’s further beyond numbers, they should know how to talk to and work with a diverse group of people especially in this industry. If we are an industry of connection... they should know how to connect with their team.

I have been working at Interstate Hotels & Resorts full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Over all, Interstate is a great company. They have been in the hotel business a long time and they know what they are doing. Great benefits, medical, dental, 401K, PTO, discount hotel rooms (pretty much anywhere you want to go).

    Cons

It is on the low end of the pay scale. The associates have constant change with transition ins and outs and that can be kind of nerve racking (not sure if too many transition outs will cause layoffs). The hours are very long at times and there is a definite need to focus on work/life balance.

    Advice to Management

When your associates do well, let them know that they are doing well. The best way to lose great people is to accept and reward mediocrity.
