I worked at Interval International as an intern (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Interval has a great work/life balance. Flexible in working hours when necessary. Many have a long tenure within the company.

    Cons

Low salaries when compared to market. Other than that I don't think I have other major cons that would apply.

I worked at Interval International full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Amazing group of people. The Creative Department isn't just a bunch of people that show up, do their work, and go home. Everyone truly gets along with each other, collaborates, and has a voice. You're truly welcome to pitch ideas and write feature articles basically right away. And your writing is seen by 1.3 million members; far more than just about any other magazine out there. Management is wonderful, works well with people and is very understanding in personal times of need, if applicable.

Oh, and the pot luck breakfast/lunch parties are off the hook.

    Cons

It's the nature of the business, because it's a travel magazine that needs to cover locations based on the company's inventory. So it's not really so much a con as it is limiting. Orlando and Mexico, aka the time share capitals of the world, take priority. From a business perspective, it makes perfect sense. Again, not so much a con in the traditional sense. But makes it hard to explore off-the-beaten-path locales as a topic.

One actual con is that the magazine now only publishes 3 issues a year, one of which is just a resort directory. It left me with a lot of down time, with very little to do. They continued to hire more people instead of redistributing the workload. (At one point I was successfully doing the work of two editorial assistants without falling behind, and they then hired two more people to the editorial staff, which is why I ultimately had a ton of down time.)

Career opportunities I'm only rating low because the company has a history of longevity, so with a fairly limited number of positions, advancing (at least in the Creative dept) can be difficult. Annual raises are also very small and not based on merit. Last year the company-wide percentage was just 2%, less than the average cost of living increase.

    Advice to Management

Don't fill positions that are unnecessary. When people are basically begging for work to do, there comes a point where vacant positions should be eliminated.
