I have been working at Intrexon full-time

    Pros

There are a lot of really great people that work at Intrexon. There are also a number of very interesting problems to be solved. The environment has improved significantly at a number of the sites in recent times. The CEO also cares a lot and works hard to make this company successful. It is often easy to doubt Intrexon but in the long run it is very likely it will be a highly successful company from a monetary standpoint.

    Cons

Long list. The company has had serious issues in the past which are best summarized by other reviews on this site. I have read through almost all of the reviews and even the worst ones are unfortunately pretty accurate. There are also a quantifiable number of relatively unqualified people who get by playing politics given the lack of strong organizational structure at the higher levels of the company.

    Advice to Management

Keep moving in the right direction. Bi-directional performance reviews should be mandated company wide and layoffs NEED to be communicated properly. This is not a startup or small company that cannot afford to pay severance etc... At this stage of the companies growth it is necessary to behave and treat people professionally or else no-one good will ever work here.

    Pros

The diversity of the workforce is fabulous. The timelines are fair, there is some stress but nothing out of the ordinary. The projects are interesting. Technical instrumentation is fair to good. Managers overall are very smart.

    Cons

Like most other companies in this industry, management is inexperienced. Technically, they are good and provide excellent advice. Problem is, they do not know how to manage a group. It seems most of the political problems are at the middle-management level. There is no hiding the fact that the technical mangers do not like each other. At times, it get's really childish and rude and creates a really uncomfortable atmosphere for the reports, between groups. Here lies Intrexon's problem and it will limit their growth. The sad part is, there is no central management to fix this.

    Advice to Management

Management needs to wake up. There is a lot of "low hanging fruit" that could be remedied. Read any Management for Dummies book and you would have a edge over all your colleagues. Or continue what you're doing and hope your pipetting skills are up to date. To be fair, because there is no central senior executive, it puts the middle, techncial managers also in a bad situation where politics rule the day. So this advice mostly goes to the top brass, whoever they are.

    Pros

Some good science being performed and some great people.
Industry average pay and good medical insurance.
    Budget for cutting edge instrumentation.

    Cons

Below industry average time off. Only 15 days PTO.
Lack of central leadership which leads to bottlenecks and also redundancy in some efforts.

    Advice to Management

Invest in employee development and work/life balance. People, not instrumentation, are your greatest resource. Treat your employees like investments and not liabilities and you will be rewarded with loyal, diligent people who will truly go the extra mile for the company.
