I worked at Intrexon full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Company is a known synthetic biology leader. They have all the tools and money.

    Cons

The ship is sinking. The level of managerial incompetence... A toxic and hostile work environment is the norm. If you're intelligent you leave or get fired.

    Advice to Management

Learn from the past - the two in charge have sunk many companies... remove them, give them potato chips to eat at home and bring in competent leaders to steer this ship!

I worked at Intrexon full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Intrexon's technology portfolio is quite diverse and provides opportunities to learn about a broad spectrum of technology. There are some interesting opportunities surrounding the non-browning apples and crop protection.

    Cons

Similar to its proprietary NG fermentation tech, much of intrexon's technology is full of hot air. There is a great cover story that provides the veneer of technology sophistication, but the truth is that much of the portfolio falls into a laggard, me-too bin. The executive level turn over is shocking, and one wonders how leadership expects progress when it cuts bait on business leads every nine months.

    Advice to Management

Take a hard look in the mirror and be honest with where your development efforts are. Then formulate a strategy and team you're willing to stick with as you dig out of the hole you've created with you're over hyped story line.

"SSF-IPD site has poor leadership with no vision, a recipe for failure."

I have been working at Intrexon full-time

    Pros

    Excellent funding, facilities, and equipment.

    Cons

IPD-SSF site has poor leadership and no vision, which has led to low morale, no sense of urgency, no shared scientific approach, and worst of all, little to no progress for years on the main program. Furthermore, since the larger Intrexon company is so diverse, it causes the supporting infrastructure to be scattered, unfocused, & slow, leading to a synergistically negative effect of poor IT, HR, Legal, Business, Finance, & Operations.

    Advice to Management

For overall Intrexon, spin-out all subsidiaries/divisions to hold them accountable for their own business case, rather than take the CEO's vast and dwindling wealth. This would also create a much more focused infrastructure leading to better IT, HR, Legal, Business, Finance, Operations, and most importantly, R&D/Science.
For IPD-SSF site, remove the top two and hire leaders with true experience & vision to inspire the site and its people to achieve great science and deliver on their programs.

I have been working at Intrexon full-time

    Pros

Excellent funding, facilities, equipment, and opportunities to do cutting edge science. The company is a meritocracy; meaning career progress is possible without a PhD. Co-workers are sharp, the lab is professionally managed, and the company’s mission is altruistic.

    Cons

There is difficulty increasing bandwidth as the company occupies a very specialized skill set.

    Advice to Management

Continue helping employees grow and give us more opportunities to make an impact. Improve communication between divisions.

    significant budget
    Nice coworkers (most of them)

    Cons

    Terrible management
    No promotion opportunity

    Pros

There are SOME very talented scientists

    Cons

All the lower-level employees are taking multiple 1-2 hour breaks during the day to socialize. I don't blame them. There are almost 0 opportunities for advancement. Sadly, the company values such employees - the ones who just come in, do an ok job, get their pay, and go home. This tells me that management has no intention of ever promote any of them.

    Advice to Management

Rethink company values. Hire valuable, hard-working people and be transparent. Don't treat your lower-level employees like lesser people.

    Pros

    Smart co-workers and bench scientist

    Cons

No management. The new manage team at Germantown site is a piece of joke. The company is heading to the cliff. Look at the stock price of Intrexon, which already tells that the market does not buy it.

    Advice to Management

Do some research first before jump into some obsessive projects. The organization successes because there are some valuable things to provide to the investor, not just doing some me-too stuff. Even the me-too stuff here are way behind the others companies.
